Old Bar Beach Festival 2007 - October Long Weekend

Gday all,

Just wondering if this is an event Syncro owners have attended in the past and if so, is anyone intending to go this time? The October Long Weekend is the start of the NSW October school holidays. The main days are the Saturday and Sunday. That gives everyone the Monday public holiday to wind down, pack up and meander back home.

Below are a few details and a link for more information, although a program for this years event is not yet available.

Anyone interested, please let me know asap ok? Cheers.

Old Bar Beach Festival 2007
Old Bar, near Taree, NSW
Saturday 29 September and Sunday 30 September 2007

Festival activities are held in multiple locations in town, including parks, sports fields, halls and the beach and have a relaxed family atmosphere. The festival will have a monster Mega Market, and will feature a Gourmet Food and Wine Fair with entertainment. Come along and enjoy this fascinating showcase of produce and producer talent from the Mid North Coast and adjoining regions. Thousands of visitors will have the opportunity to indulge their senses and relish the sights, sounds and flavours on offer.

This year:
World record kombi and transporters gathering: Old Bar is out to create a world record for the largest congregation of Kombis and Transporters.

Sporting events: Rugby Tens is 10-a-side rugby and was here thirty-five years ago. The brainchild of a group of innovative Cobras, Tens rugby is a fast and open game that still retains much of the character of the 15s version. The Old Bar Beach Tens is a weekend festival, with games lasting 20 minutes, except for finals, which is of 30 minutes duration. The world's first Tens tournament was held in Kuala Lumpur in 1967 and was won by the Royal Selangor Club. Cobra won in 1968.

Hi Ken and all,

Last October I attended the Kombi count in Old Bar - we made it ti 146 I think. Let me tell you, the Festival is well worth a visit - it is avtion packed and great fun.

Especially the airstrip, which is situated next to the Kombi line-up. This is a real thriller for kids and all and with a 40kt headwind like last year, the Hercules that came to visit, came in with minimum speed - quite unbelievable and then seeing this beast taxiing backwards into the scrub to clear the runway! Quite an experience.

I will be there in my red Dual Cab Syncro Tristar - and hope to see many of you.

Kind regards
Hartmut Kiehn

Hi Ken, Hartmut and all,

Deb and I (and Max) were considering this and if a few Syncros are
going then it should be good.

So it seems from the rego form we need to old-fashioned post a cheque
or money order for $5 to participate, by September 3? Doesn't sound
like they make it easy to get vehicles along to achieve a record...

Regards,
Mark.

Gday Mark, Hartmut and ALL

Thanks for these responses and I'm sure more would be just great. Please respond asap.

Ok well that's great if as many as can be there ... do go, the urgency I feel then is for those going to secure a booking asap at the adjacent caravan park, which is also handy to the beach. I'm thinking arriving Friday and leaving Monday.

The park has an excellent online booking facility .. $30/night for 2 people on a powered site ...  It'd be nice to "corral" the syncros in the park but the danger is the sites are probably filling fast.

As for registering the vehicle, you'd think registering on arrival with a $5 note would be possible eh ......

Cheers.

Dear Ken,
Just to let you know we are not all snowed in in the deep south and would have been tempted with the Old Beach Festival but will be off to China for 7 weeks from mid-Sept. Hope those who go have a good time.
Have put myself down as a maybe for the Cape Tour next May and am keen to try to convert it into a positive. Feel we might be towing the Kombis out of trouble but its nearly 40years since I went only as far as Cooktown and I gather even a chap who operates his syncro only in 2wd would have no trouble now!
Cheers
Roger

Roger,

Cape Tour eh ... so then Roger, I take it the challenge is ....... I
take the old dirt road and rickety creek crossings to the cape in my 2WD
syncro and you cruise the newfangled 4 lane highway with working VC and
difflocks and I say there's a bloody good chance I'll still get there
first ..... hhmmmmmm ........ fair enough ...

Now convert that into a positive ..............

Ken,
Without doubt you would be there first. After seeing you at Shallow Crossing I reckon if you had gone with Burke and Wills you would have beaten them to the Cape particularly if they had given you a camel that was gone in the front legs (ie RWD only). You would probably also have had spare parts for every contingency tucked in orifices the camel didn't even realise it had.
Cheers
