Old Bar festival 2023

Yeah, missed you Pete.

I was surprised at the lack of T3’s there syncro or 2wd - very disappointing.

I was thinking everyone had something else on, yet there was a lot more in the Saturday afternoon cruise and they didn’t return for the park up on Sunday unfortunately.

Maybe it was the massive $10 charge per vehicle that kept them away?

Anyway, glad you had a good trip - your hot start/ rich running issue may be the Temp 2 sensor. When they go the computer seems to over fuel the engine as I think it assumes the engine is always ice cold.

When my 2wd did that - the engine ran great at high speed but terrible at low speeds as it was flooding the engine for the amount of air coming in.

They are a very common failure point.

I think my replacement one is now also on its way out after only 4 years of service.

As Richard said, go for a trip and see how wet your plugs are…

That’s a good point on the temp 2 Scott. I have had one go out of spec on me and caused running issues at low speed. I also had issues with the cable to it (the van puffed black smoke for a while) after driving through deep water.

Interesting about the cable after driving through water.

In the last 3 years with all the flooding, I think we all have driven through fairly deep water - especially the massive splash effect you get driving at highway speeds through small rivers flowing across the road due to poor drainage design of the freeways near me!

Things should dry out this summer though.

I have not replaced the cable to the temp 2 sender yet, I initially replaced the sender itself, when the issue persisted, I looked at the connector and how it clipped on (sound but was a little loose). I think this fixed the issue, but it surfaced again during an off-road adventure. I think it’s more likely the cable. I have put a small length of old bicycle tube over the cable/connector/sender to keep water away and so far, this has helped and have not has the issue for a while now.
The downside is dirt/dust builds up inside the tube, so need to clean that out if I’ve been off road.

When I first got the van, I had a similar issue with deep water and the coolant level sender (in the header tank) would flash, this was fixed by putting a new connector on the cable.

Just to clarify for me “deep” water is up to the bumper. I’ve not has the Syncro in water over my knee in depth. The T2 however has been through deeper water than that a few times

There are a couple of versions of those coolant level sensor cable connectors to the sensor.

One holds well (the one with the flexible rubber surround) and the other is inclined to be a bit loose/ dodgy.

Anyone heading to Old Bar in 2024?

Yes…us two. And you?

Definitely Richard.

We are camping in Lanis again but not in our previous long term position as the idiotic new managers of the park gave it away - but we managed to secure a small site just down from where we were (which I am sure has displaced another VW camper).

Looking forward to a fantastic event as usual.

I hear there was camping available on the runway next to the carnival. Note sure if there is any left though.

I’ll be heading down, should be there Saturday and Sunday. Will be good to catch up.
Thanks Scott was wondering what was happening with camping. Heading down and back looks like everything is booked out along the coast, so might be an overnight at a roadside stop for us.

Rafael is also hoping to have his van ready to come down also, new radiator, oil cooler, distributor amongst other bits and pieces. He has a nice gauge set up to watch temps also. Hopefully he has a better run than heading to Valla.

Fantastic Richard.

Hopefully the weather behaves like it did at Valla and Rafael comes prepared to camp with the necessities rather than almost freezing to death.

Im not 100% sure he doesnt have a buggered head gasket after it overheating so much.

Hopefully thats not correct as he has a lot longer drive than Valla.

Roadside camping is a good and cheap option.

Thanks Scott, yes hopefully the weather is good. Looks like a fun movie night Friday “kombi man”
Rafael has done a fair bit of work to it now and done a few test runs. He will be better prepared this time at least. But yes, over stressing an old motor can lead to issues on a long run.

A few photos of what was a fantastic event which I have been assured will be on again next year despite rumors and many other festivals that have fallen.

Great to see a few syncros and quite a few 2wd T3s.

The weather was sensational - although a bit warm for my poor Golden Retriever.

This dark blue one was all Subie drive-train with portal axles running wide 5 brakes from a Type 3 at the rear and adapters to the front on stock VW T3 brakes on the front. The portal axles are VW and designed to reverse the Subie transmission at the exles rather than at the back of the gearbiox as many are done.

He said he plans to get a Subie front diff and connect up so its basically an All Wheel Drive.

Very interesting van!

We need to update to a new section…Old Bar 2024!
Nice photos Scott.
It was good to see people and their steeds, after a long absence.
