oxygen sensor removal

As preventative maintenance at 170ks I am thinking of replacing the oxygen sensor on my 2.1 motor.

I have a couple of Qs if you could help.

1-  Is this a good idea?

2 - am I likely to damage the thread on the catalytic convertor when attempting to remove the partly rusty/ welded sensor?

Thanks Greg N

I have just replaced mine as part of trying to fix my running problems. Car has done 200,000 km and I had no trouble at all getting the old one out. I assume when it was put in they used plenty of lubrication. Got mine from Tooleys in Sydney.  It’s a good idea to get the compete unit with the two plugs rather than splicing in just the sensor. Overnight delivery by Aus Post. Has not lead to any noticeable change in performance though. But it’s good to do as they recommend replacing every 100,000 km.

Thanks Peter. We had a go getting the old one off with a large set spanner but nothing doing. Still not sure how much leverage it can handle.  Greg
Hi Greg,
Along the line i have taken a few out . If you can get hold of a 22 mm Ringspanner you should not have a problem, would also help if you can warm it up a bit. Anyway, with a Ringspanner you are distributing the force evenly onto 6 sides.

1. it's Way Past Due to be replaced.

2. start spraying a good penetrating oil on the threads now ...and frequently for a while.

3. Generally ..I've found them to cooperate about unscrewing.

4. in a bad case you may need to head around it with an oxy-accetylene torch........carefully.

5. it's not good to leave one in that long anyway.
