Ken,
I have never understood the policy of pricing themselves out of the market and alienating just about all existing VW owners.

Part pricing
ALL,
On the odd occasion, one succumbes to telephoning the VW dealership for a part price and availability check. Sort of desperate times for desperate people.

I don't have any trouble.

At least I get the correct part.
I have just bought a genuine VW cap from a dealer and it was around $40 with one large valve.

My recent experience with the thermostat suggests that there can be a significant difference in performance between a genuine part and an el cheapo replacement. The thermostat in my engine was non-genuine; it was slow and erratic at all times. I replaced it with a genuine part (Behr) and it is now quick, smooth and stable.
Unfortunately, the only way to determine whether a non-genuine part will perform as well as the genuine is to try them both. In the case of the thermostat, I wasn’t prepared to risk the engine.
