Parts

My 2wd caravelle has had the rear tail light mod.

Do you have any instructions for that?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Richard,

Great online "show & tell". We all should do more here! Even more popular in a group sharing freecamp setting!

Spanner: Attached Pic 01 shows the two tools to R&R the pump pulley hex head bolts, discussed here years ago.

I think the specialised tool you found best suits round headed allen key style bolts?

Door pockets: Pic 02 shows my new door pockets. Original ones lasted since circa 1992. Multi purpose, these suit me best for everyday use and things inside don't rattle. I'd rather not waste them for storage of maps.

Door pocket: Pic 3 shows my maps do fit in the door pocket, but I'd rather have currently used map located in the isle between the seats, for easy/quick reference.

Map pocket: Pic 4 shows map storage is best for me on the back of the cooking cupboard. Also see towel rail. Also see hook for hanging plastic garbage bag in kitchen!

There are other mods, a few here:

STOP lights: Pic 05.

Instrument cluster: Pic 06.

Triple jet screen washers: Pic 07.

Mini skirt and engine skid plate: Pic 08. Skirt best for cold climates. Plate for serious offroading.

Enjoy.

Hi all,
Found a few interesting things recently.
First one is a spanner, it fit's over the bolts of the pulley (water and power steer pump) to help with tightening. Have not tried it yet, but have not seen these before.
Next, bought some Bilstein shocks. Thought I'd get a set as the price was good. The say made in Germany, not sure how good they are, the covers are only light plastic.
Similar, got two different Thermostats. One is Meyle, German brand but made in china. The other is Wahler, made in Germany.

I also bought a set of head light protectors. These are a nice fit and clip to the grill, no mods or screws.

Have also been looking at storage options in the cabin.
I see there are a few styles of door map pockets out there. Interested in feed back of anyone who has tried some. I have a factory pocket on the drivers door, and want something for the passenger door.

Similar, have seen a few people have the dash trays. Have attached a picture of one. Interested in peoples thoughts if their worth having? I also have a padded dash, looks like they need cutting to fit.

Richard

Unfortunately not Ken.

It was done to mine before I bought it.

Shame I want to do it to my syncro.

Cheers,

Scott

Thanks for all the great info, always good to see Ken, and hopefully I will be in the free camp on the last week end at Macksville (still not certain).

I like the idea of your door pockets, as I have a caravelle it fixes the issue of restricted room between the door and the arm rest. Might be a job I assign to the mother in law :)

I was spoilt in the T2 with the full width under dash tray, but for no particular reason have never done anything to make the cabin usable in the Syncro.

I was not aware of the previous post regarding pump pulleys, I have removed/installed a number of similar ways over the years. I was not looking for the tool, but it caught my eye and thought I'd give it a try. I'll post details when I give it a go. I was wondering the same how it will work with hex head bolts as it comes with no instructions, I will test it with both bolt styles.

I have previously bought a deep socket for the steering wheel nut, but have yet to make a spanner for the oil pressure switch (assume I can get an appropriate deep socket) and possibly make a spanner for the 3 belt pulley. Posts I have seen before so on my to-do list.

I do remember your discussions on the lights last year, and another on my to do list. If Peter Bellamy is reading, I know he was looking at a solution also, possible already done? My current plan is to source a set of original lights with fog lights and modify from there. I hope to get something a little different as I would like the extra light to be a combined brake and stop light so you have a double up on both. The next step with be to replicate the lights up high (possibly on a roof rack) so they will be visible above my trailer. But that's a long term plan.

I have bought a lot of parts over the last 6 months for planned projects on the Syncro, just finding the time to fit them is the struggle for me!

That's one of the great things about this forum. When ever anyone has issues/upgrades/repairs I put them on the to do list so I am hopefully repairing issues that will happen to me at some stage. The big ones being upgrades to the fuel, cooling system, decoupler that have all been done now.

Just an aside (non Syncro related), one of the distractions taking me away form the Syncro this years is I have been restoring a few old (push) bikes on and off this year, it's been an interesting journey, one of the many updates was fitting dynamo lights and LED bulbs. I've been suitable impressed with the results given you only have 6volts/3 watts to play with!!

There are potentially two socket sizes involved. First is the smaller switch size, second is the larger size being the screw in flat base the switch is screwed onto. It's possible when unscrewing the switch, the flat base can release and come out with it.

Thanks Ken, I will look at that for the pressure switch, but not sure I would put a hole in the cover for access. (though I have already put a hole in to drain coolant without needing to remove them)

On the pulley, for the bolt that holds it on. There's not a lot of room there for standard sockets.
Sorry on the lights, that was a typo, I did mean combined tail light/brake. The plan would be if I could fit a base on there from another light. But until I get some spare lights and start to look at what's involved not sure yet. Another option could be cut away the internals and mount a small LED panel behind the lens.

I have started to do some work on the Syncro now, will try and get a few progress pictures to share.

Thanks Ken, I will look at that for the pressure switch, Sorry, think we are at cross purposes. Thought you were speaking about the bottom oil pressure switch, hence my reply. but not sure I would put a hole in the cover for access. (though I have already put a hole in to drain coolant without needing to remove them)

On the pulley, for the bolt that holds it on. There's not a lot of room there for standard sockets. Yeah it's often a too tight tool fit with the tinware still in place. A few things can help.

With a reduced shoulder Sidchrome 30mm socket like this ... https://www.gettoolsdirect.com.au/sidchrome-3-4-drive-socket-30mm-12pt-scmt15722.html  .....

Cut the socket shorter, to provide maximum 13mm bolt head insertion.

Make a spreader tool to widen the free space between engine case and tinware, ie ... pushes the tinware rearward.

Use a compact head wrench. Should then be enough to R&R the drive pulley bolt.

Main issue left is whether the expanded free space is enough to allow the triple drive pulley to be slid rearwards and then up and out, clearing the engine case. Methinks it’s still not enough clearance. Anyone know for sure?

Sorry on the lights, that was a typo, I did mean combined tail light/brake. The plan would be if I could fit a base on there from another light. But until I get some spare lights and start to look at what's involved not sure yet. Yeah well, suggest you experiment with Hella, NOT ULO brand tail light sets. Hella bulb holder power tracks are frontside, so easily accessible, ULO are rearside internal, so quite difficult.  Another option could be cut away the internals and mount a small LED panel behind the lens. At Macksville, let’s do a “show & tell” of my rear stop light mods, enabling four stop bulbs instead of two.

I have started to do some work on the Syncro now, will try and get a few progress pictures to share. Tick !
