Thanks Greg, i think the pump is a Bosch but i'll get some numbers and give him a buzz, there's also a place in Thomastown a friend suggested.
Appreciate the contact.

Gary, I asked a guy at work who used to work on old mercs he recommended a guy in moorabbin, J&A Diesel 9555 4384. If you look on the side of the pump there should be a manufacturers tag that will give the make and model of pump, give him this info and he should be able to give you at least a ball park figure on a rebuild. That would make a great conversion if i could find the bits and afford it!
You don't know anyone who could do the pump rebuild by any chance?

Gary, If it is any consolation I think you are in a very fortunate position as the 1.6 is ripe for a conversion to 1.9TDI (aaz?). I drove a brand new golf 3 tdi from sydney to melbourne on one tank of fuel, great engine with plenty of go. As far as I can tell it would be a simple engine swap if you put mechanical injection on it. Check out this link from Bernd Jaeger. http://www.syncro- bernd-jaeger. de/ENGLISH/ Neuer_TDI/ neuer_tdi. html That said I guess a pump rebuild would still be on the cards to keep the van going whilst you procure the parts. Thanks Greg, I was reading some of the UK forums and they also seemed to suggest the same. There is a smell of diesel around the back of the vehicle after use also which was never there before. No leaks from anywhere that i can see.
It's also been burning a bit of oil and i'm assuming the blue smoke is oil getting into the turbo inlet via the rocker cover breather which suggests blowby? This also seems to be a common issue on the UK forums with worn engines.
I'm not sure what to do next, i am less keen on spending a lot on this engine in case it has a crack in the head or a valve problem. I only have basic paperwork confirming the rebuild so who knows what was actually done. The engine seems pretty good in that it is clean and oiltight despite this smoking issue.
It is a bit underpowered though so maybe i should start looking for another engine rather than spending a lot on a pump rebuild. I believe the 1.9 TD Golf engine is a fairly easy swap and i might be able to get one of those with a bit of life left in it? Some more torque would make all the difference.

Gary it sounds like the high pressure pump needs rebuilding. The symptoms fit and its about the only thing left that has not been done! Greg

Hi Greg it's been getting a bit smoky of late but in the last month it seems to have got a lot worse. Smoke is black, blue and grey at various times. Engine was rebuilt and had new head approx 40k ago. It runs fine and no oil in water so not sure what's up. Not sure where to start. I had the fuel pump timing checked and put a set of new injectors in a while back but the smoking has got worse since the colder weather. I've been using it a lot less though.
Any ideas?

Francesca, Greg, Gary & Roger have indicated interest in an overnight 4wd tour in the Melbourne area. This has been approved by the VWCV as a club event. I’ve recently spoken to Chris from VWCV, who is going to scout a route for us, about a date. Both he and I are going to the VW Spectacular at Valla in the last week of July. It would be possible, but tight, to do it before we go away, but I’m leaning towards leaving it till after we come back which, for me, is the end of August. This would probably mean a September or October event. The weather should be better then, especially for the camp-out.

I’d like some quick feedback from those above if you’re happy to leave it till a little later in the year. Any-one else who may be interested can take this as a reminder and also register your interest now, and your feedback about the timing.
Thanks,
