Planning advice

Hi all.

I've decided I wish to start planning a road trip to the Kimberly's from central Qld (mackay) as my starting point in the next 12 months.

I'm just wondering if any of you guys have done such a trip and can advise me on the required time needed for such a journey and or preferred seasons to be there?

I was thinking of setting aside 1 month and possibly traveling south to Perth and then crossing vack east towards Brisbane.

I'm yet to do a motor and box upgrade but once done say in six months with all new suspension/wheels n tyres and sufficient spares and tools I should be right.

Hamish,

Sounds like a fantastic plan with the perfect vehicle.

I would suggest doing it in the dry season - our normal late winter as it will stay fairly warm up that way regardless of the time of year - just means the rivers are lower - you could almost drive across the backs of the crocs!

Take lots of photos and post them here.

Cheers,

Skot

Hey Hamish LOVE YOUR TASTE IN THE vr6 there are some completed conversions on utube have you spotted them
please add me to your mailing list re photos details etc. peterw1000@gmail.com.
Couple of weeks ago there was an issue regarding posting details about modifying Syncros from their standard form on this forum so im guessing no ones game to comment on your upgrade. Maybe you missed the notification by Les ?
About your trip I would travel anti clockwise as its all tailwind. I did the loop around Aust and everyone coming clockwise complained about the strong headwinds powering up in the afternoon.
Maybe also make sure you have fly screens sorted as there are some serious mosquito issues around in the North especially in Kakadu.
I left Bris in May and got back September and felt a bit rushed ?
Regards Pete

Hi Pete.

Thanks for your advice about  anti clockwise. I would have never thought of that.

Wow a 5 month trip. I can't get that much time off as I have a business.

I have driven from Gove to mackay in 3 days but that was a rush.

Modifications - I will do what I want and possibly help someone else at same time.

Hi HAmish. Take a copy of "Camps australia 7 " its a publication of free andlow cost camp sites all around australia. Well worth having on the seat next to you. I have heard caravan parks can be wickedly expensive in the north west. Bill

Here's a few pics of the annual surf trip up north.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Syncro_T3_Australia/photos/album/1990887708/pic/list

3000 km's towing a tinnie. Have to say a well tuned syncro can do this quite easy on 110 kmh. Mind you it's pretty flat over here..

Great waves and fishing if anyone's over west.

Haven't got the tow bar on the beast yet Pete in case you're wondering.

Mark
Nice set up. I miss my tinni behind my Syncro. May I ask what springs u are running on your Syncro. It doesn't look stock.

Hamish,

Go westy springs with OME Shocks. Also air bags inside rear springs to keep level with water and fuel and spare on the back.
I would suggest minimum 2300 kg machine with these springs, mine tops out a bit on the front unless loaded. Otherwise a vast improvement over standard setup. Really liking the Bridgestones also.
Gives about 290 mm ground clearance.

Mark,

Where did you get your air-bags inside the rear spring set up from?

Is it a complete system or does it require compressors, controller etc?

Thanks,

Skot

I'm also running gowesty springs - I previously had seikel springs.

Swapped them out about 3 months ago after 12 or so years.

Difference being they were not progressive like GW - to be honest I preferred the seikel springs from a pavement point of view- I think their initial spring constant (also constant throughout) was stiffer than the GW springs at the beginning of the compression and as a result there is more body roll on roundabouts and turns now.

Nice stance your car has though.

Skot,

rear air bags came though my suspension shop. Valves at the back near the license plate. Pump up with a bike pump is easiest as they go up real quick. Have a look at this link, they're on the list :
http://www.airbagman.com.au/AirbagApps.pdf

I find level is much better for handling at speed.
