Nice links there Ken.

You definitely have your finger on the pulse regarding T3 campers.

Gotta love that skid mark brown interior in the 89 Trakka. Otherwise it looks awesome.

Thank you all so much for your well wishes and I really am moved from all the Syncronaught's kind words.
For those who don't know I do have another really special Syncro on blocks in my Garage just waiting to leap out at the right time so I am not giving them away completely as it is in the blood. If you are interested in some great shots of 2007 Bateman's bay take a look at www.syncro.com.au the gallery section and you will see my metallic brown baby and one shot the rear wheel is airborne and my head is out the window (great trip that was).
What I am planning to do is sell my blue Trakka Syncro and find a T3 2wd Trakka camper auto (if they exists, any leads anyone) as I can manage an auto at this time?
Ben- That was my nephew and he loves his Syncro it really suits his life style this was owned by Peter K , from the south coast most of the team know that machine.
Skot- If you let your mate know if he is interested as I am interested in selling (if the price is right).

Well once again thanks to all.

Hi Ken & Rick,

Ken, you're making it look like Trakka Syncro's are as common as Toyota's.

And Rick, be wary of early T5 autos (2005/6), they are developing a bit of a reputation for short lives and very expensive repairs. What you really need is a T5GP with DSG and 4Motion, and this weekend's winning Tattslotto numbers.

Hi all,

My syncro has developed what appears to be a common problem since I
replaced the water pump on my scooby syncro which is the coolant pipes
have split up near the radiator at the front of the vehicle which is
spewing coolant out everywhere.

My mechanic tried his usual supplier of after-market parts and found
they are no longer available.

Is there anywhere else that sells these or are stainless steel pipes the
go? If so where do you get them in Sydney or Central Coast.

I need to try and get them before Old Bar and in the syncro if possible.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Skott,

re: Stainless steel coolant pipes ...
goto: http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=4210&category_id=&category_parent_id=
The jury is still out on whether adding an additional metal to the coolant system metal mix is a good or bad thing.

Repair kit for plastic pipes ...

Repair kit in-depth detail ...
Depending upon the extent of damage to the front ends of those plastic pipes, repairing these joints with the above GoWesty repair kit may be the quickest and most economical way to go.

Must have on board ... emergency coolant system repairer ...

Decisions, decisions .... good luck!

Cheers.

Thanks,

Skot

Francesca,

I don't recall you ever reporting back here as to your satisfaction or otherwise concerning your coolant pipe repair using the GoWesty kit. Care to enlighten us please?

Also with my GoWesty kit repair, I chose to double clip each joint for what I considered was added precaution and more security. So I used the spring clips on each joint and added to them a screw up clip as well. My front plastic coolant pipe joints with the GoWesty kit haven't leaked since ... touch wood.

Cheers.

Thanks to all who responded.

Just Kampers have one set of stainless steel coolant pipes designed for 4wd or syncro due to arrive next week which I have now put my name on.

My mechanic said there was a fair bit of damage to the end of the pipe and mentioned a possible repair but he said he wouldn't trust it on a long journey.

Hence, to be sure I am going to replace them both.

Syncro is apparently loads easier than 2wd as you don't need to negotiate the fuel tank.

Cost of the coolant pipes is significantly higher though for a syncro compared to a 2wd. The plastic pipes are now apparently obsolete.

Fingers crossed Just Kampers ordered in the correct coolant pipe set.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Ken and all

Sorry Ken, I didn’t report either...til now I have done 3 and none is leaking so far.  The Tristar was fixed using the Go Westy kit after discussing it with you I opted for the double up of clamps too.

What I didn’t like is the fact that the broken ends (rings) stayed in place. What I did, I warmed up the ends of the pipe , removed the metal end pipe then squaring off the plastic tube, refitting the

Metal end pipe and fixing it  with 4 pop rivets  to  the plastic pipe. I covered the rivets with JB Weld from the inside. The 4 rivets should be placed towards the end of the plastic pipe so that they are

Covered by the radiator hose when it gets installed.

This has worked for me and I did the third one the same way. It too is still ok. Please be aware that this method is strictly bush mechanics and should not be copied but it is good to know that

This can be successfully applied if one finds oneself halfway between  Birdsville and Mt Dart maybe, or anywhere else for that matter....

Cheers,

Skot

Also with my GoWesty kit repair, I chose to double clip each joint for what I considered was added precaution and more security. So I used the spring clips on each joint and added to them a screw up clip as well. My front plastic coolant pipe joints with the GoWesty kit haven't leaked since ... touch wood.

Cheers.

Skot,I had some made up by an exhaust shop(steel),I cut them in half, had a bead put on the end and joined them with hose in the centre.
Makes it heaps easier to fit them.

Thanks Ben.

I am runnimg a bit short on time. We need to take the syncro to Old Bar as it is our accomodation & beverage holder.

It is only a couple of weeks away so cutting it too fine.

Anyway the coolant pipes from JK come in two pieces each with a joiner I would say so it is probably a similar set up.

Pretty sure Harts Garage did this coolant pipe work recently too.

Hartmut,
Yeah thanks a lot for that ... great to get some feedback here on these projects, helps everyone.

If it was me though, I'd be concerned about drilling a number of rivet holes near the end of already dicky and debatable fragile 21 year old plastic pipe. Time will tell if splits start up tracking between the rivet holes.
But I know you are supremely confident they'll outlast you! HA!
Cheers.

I am liking the idea of stainless steel even more.

VW use plastic in everything these days - I cant believe how much plastic is in my 20V 1.8L petrol Golf donk. Its everywhere, inlet manifolds, coolant pipes, soon they will make a plastic engine block!

Scott,
Well plastic is lighter, fit for purpose, probably not made in China, doesn't add to the metal mix in coolant systems and can last 20+ years with a little TLC.
Remember these pipes were once metal, but they changed to plastic later, the reasons why I can only guess.
Good luck doing the changeover, I'm happy to see you've got it all to do, not me. I reckon the underside of mine is a hornets nest!
Cheers.

I am liking the idea of stainless steel even more.

VW use plastic in everything these days - I cant believe how much plastic is in my 20V 1.8L petrol Golf donk. Its everywhere, inlet manifolds, coolant pipes, soon they will make a plastic engine block!

HA!
Cheers.

Hartmut

Cheers,

Skot

Also with my GoWesty kit repair, I chose to double clip each joint for what I considered was added precaution and more security. So I used the spring clips on each joint and added to them a screw up clip as well. My front plastic coolant pipe joints with the GoWesty kit haven't leaked since ... touch wood.

Cheers.

Seems like all of these that are regularly used will have this coolant pipe issue as it is clearly a very weak point in the system.

My bank manager is not looking forward to next week.

The only one that will be happy will be my syncro.

Cheers,

Skot

I would have to agree with Phill after seeing hoses kark it on cars just five or six years old!
