I was in the Wombat State Forest last week with some friends and thought it might be a good spot to have a local Syncro meetup. There are plenty of semi-challenging roads to explore without getting too extreme. Also loads of spots to camp up and spend the night and a few State run campsites as well.
Now we have some of our freedom back, who would be keen in the next few months? Potentially it would be quite fresh (cold) but with the right gear (and whiskey + fire) should be ok. It can be a stunning time of year with the right weather (sun). Obviously we would need to pick the right weekend and pay close attention to the weather forecast.
Also a quick question. There were some quite deep puddles that I drove through that weekend out in the forest. Obviously no issue for the van at the time but the next weekend I came to drive the van, the rear brakes were completely seized. I never use the hand brake where I park but it wouldn’t budge. Managed to resolve this today with a good whack on the drum with a large hammer. I assume there isn’t much I can do about this but any tips appreciated?
Cheers.
Jon.
Hi Jon.
I can’t help with your brake problem.
But we would love a campout in the Wombat Forest.
Gerald and Robyn.
Greetings Jon,
Sounds good, happy to come along .

Great idea Jon, I’d also be interested

Wow that sounds like fun but seeing how Vic is going with protests and Covid 19 cases I am expecting NSW to close it borders soon.
I would love to but at the moment I wont be able to come. Not sure my bones could handle the cold - I know I am very soft.
With your rear brakes - maybe you got some mud stuck in there which clogged up and with some rust it locked. Might be worth pulling it apart for an inspection.
Cheers,
Scott
What date have you got in your mind Jon?
Keen if I’m around
Sounds like a seized handbrake cable - except that you don’t use it! Check that the inspection/adjustment plugs are in situ - it might just have been dried mud. Otherwise, the brake-shoe return springs might be weak or broken. Don’t buy the cheap rubbish springs from JK.
A trip to the Wombat sounds like fun, depending on the progress of the Plague.
Roger.
Like most people I cancelled all holidays so the only weekend I cannot do at the minute is the 8th August. Would stongly advise we look at the forecast prior to committing as it is not pleasant out there in the cold and wet. It will likely be cold either way but this weekend was a cracker with the sun out. The Wombat State Park is 10 minutes from home so will start planning.
Provisionally shall we say 1st August?
Cheers.
Jon.

Great Jon.
We’ll try and keep that weekend free.
Thanks s
Gerald and Robyn
I’de planned to be camping at thredbo the week after. See how that turns out.
I suspect 1st August is a no go for most now? Let’s aim to reschedule for later in the year.
Got out into the Lerderderg today for the first time. Marked some really nice campsites. Some of the 4wd trails are marked and graded (medium/hard). Only tried the medium and was mainly ok. Backed out of one deep muddy section as we were out our own with no backup (or recovery gear). Even a small river crossing. Really nice out there.
Once this ridiculous period is over, would be the perfect place for a meetup.

Looks nice John. Some decent sized trees your parked next to!

More inspiration from the weekend. Quick trip into the clouds on top of Mt Macedon (for exercise with the family).
