Power loss and now not starting

Hi team,

My beautiful 1990 silver  Syncro Caravelle has done it again.
It let us down.
On the way to a bike excursion it started to slow down under full throttle and finally came to a halt - engine stopped.
Called RACV. The man said most likely fuel filter or pump. Can't do anything about it here get tow truck.

Van now @ home.
Have spark
Changed fuel filter and fuel pump.
Pump running about 10.5 V when pumping - pressure in fuel system.
Injectors firing.
Cleaned grounds in engine bay.
Get fuel in fuel lines.
Sprayed starter fluid into intake --  wants to go.
Changed ECU.

Turning - over not starting

Helpful ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tom
Hi Tom.  So you have fuel pressure? Since you have spare parts galore I would try swapping the blue temp sensor and if that's not it the air flow meter. Gregor

I have also seen a clogged catalytic converter stop a motor.

Try taking that off and see if it starts if all else fails.

Best of luck.

Cheers,

Skot

Thanks Gregor,

Where is the blue temp sensor?
Just swapped the air low meter-- that's not it.

Hallo Tom,

check the hallsensor of the ignition distributor. If it doesnot work,  there is no fuelinjektion and no ingnition at the spark plug.

good luck

Changed blue temp sensor below thermostat no change.
I have ignition spark and injectors are spraying.

This happened about 20 km after I filled up.
Could it be fuel?
I don't have enough containers to drain a full tank@ present.

I also once had a faulty muffler that caused power loss but this muffler is new.
Have to check catalytic converter.

Hi Tom pls check catcon asap.
Mine died slowly and finally the engine died when the catcon had collapsed. Once i had it knocked out with a steel bar the engine ran perfectly again.
Just a thought , Hart
Ps remember Theo ? He had a spark too but in the end it was the coil !

Yes, Theo's was an odd one as the spark looked fine, but not even aero start would get it to run,

Don't forget as a test a number of things can be unplugged, such as O2 sensor, temp sensor, even the AFM. Will not run well, but will start and eliminates them from the fault finding list.

Definitely check at the coil (is a test for resistance in the Bentley manual), plugs and plug leads.

Had not heard of the exhaust/CAT issue before, but worth checking.

Bit of a long shot as your injectors and spark plugs fire, but worth checking/swapping the ECU and fuel pump relays (next to coil) Bad contacts inside can give a voltage drop to the ECU

Scott and Hart - you were right,

It was the catalytic converter,
Once I took it off the J pipe the engine came alive.
The inside of the converter had bits and pieces broken off which would have blocked the outlet pipe.
I replaced the converter. It's all good now.

Thanks for all your suggestions

Hi Tom, great news.
Your Silver Syncro Caravelle is beautiful again.
Gerald
Great result Tom.

The cat converters are getting pretty bad these days.

Take it out and clear out all the rot then it should be a great free flowing cat and it should work well.

I have seen this issue come up quite a few times in the last couple of years.

It perplexing as everything else seems to work - the usual suspects anyway.

Happy travels.

Cheers,

Skot
