Pre Pump Fuel Filter

Has anyone fitted a pre fuel pump filter?
Any opinions?

Some owners have been fitting a Ryco Z153K filter to their T3s. It's just a generic type nylon see through filter with 10.9mm inlet and outlet.
Phill,

I've often thought about fitting a supplementary in-line fuel filter ... however to see if one could be fitted before the fuel pump, I measured the length of existing fuel line hose between the ends of the fuel tank and fuel pump spiggots and it was only 70mm. To make more room, there is a bit of leeway to slide the pump further away from the tank, but it's not a lot.

Then I just read on Q&A at Ryco website the following ....

What is the difference between fuel filters used on carbureted systems versus EFI?

Generally the carburetted system operates at low pressure and has relatively low flow. Filters are often nylon bodied.

EFI filters are metal bodied, and designed to handle higher pressures and flow. The media can also differ between filter types.

So in addition to the above question whether or not there is enough room to fit one to a syncro as compared to a 2WD T3, this seems to me to be saying then that those nylon in-line fuel filters are unsuited to our higher pressure EFI fuel system?

What say you?

Cheers.

Ken

Thanks Ken, I didn't look at the syncro.
Well it is on the inlet to the pump, so pressure wouldn't be a problem.
But would the flow rate be OK?

I assume that the manufacturers always fit the filter after the pump so that if the filter gets blocked the pump will not burn out. The pumps are liquid cooled.

I wonder how they have been fitting them to syncros?

Phill, I would wonder wether you would really need such a thing. It would only be usefull if you got a really bad dose of fuel from over head tanks or very poorly maintained servo. If that is the kind of thing you are worried about you will need one with a water drain and mount it remotely as I doubt fitting it between the tank and pump would be viable. Easy way out is to carry a spare pump and filter. Greg E

It just seems to be a common problem. Apparently RON98 fuel (which I use) is much cleaner. Maybe it is owners using crap fuel?

These instances that you have heard about, did the bad fuel actually damage the pump or just block the filter? Also were they syncros or 2wd? In my experiance usually when 2wd owners have blocked fuel filters it because there fuel tank is rusty inside. Greg E

One syncro very low kms it damaged the pump. Pump was dismantled and fine grit was found inside causing it to seize.

The others were hearsay from a VW workshop and most were 2wd and unknown syncros.

This is why I am asking for opinions.

Phill, I would wipe the 2wds off your radar unless their tanks have been removed and inspected for rust. In my time on the tools the times I had cars towed in due to a gut full of bad fuel it was about 90% of the time from overhead tanks on farms or dodgy low volume rural service stations. There is no harm in doing it I would just add these caveats.
 1. Do a proper job of mounting it and clamping the hoses. 2. Use a steel body filter. 3. Include the replacement of  this filter in your service schedule.
Remember if you have a leak in this area at speed the fuel will be splashing straight on the hot exhaust and I have personally seen those ryco filters split open. Not suitable for the undercarriage of a syncro IMHO. Greg E
