Prop shaft vibration

Good Afternoon Syncro fans.

First time posting, appreciating all the great knowledge and resources here, wish i knew about this site the last time i had a Syncro!

May i ask for advice re prop shaft vibration?, Vibration only happens and certain speeds, does not happen with prop shaft removed.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
If it is a balancing problem , are there go to people in Sydney or Newcastle?

I had old worn black front diff mounts replaced by new yellow front ones…immediately had vibration at 85k/hr.
So had prop shaft removed…which eliminated the vibration…mmm…strange.
Went back to original size new black diff mounts, reinstalled prop shaft, vibration gone.
The mounts were a different thickness, which changed the angle of the connection.
Anyway, worked for me.

I had an issue with prop shaft vibration after having the viscous coupling replaced in my first 1989 Syncro. Then I found a site that said you had to make sure the shaft was replaced in it’s original position. Lining up the bolt holes back to where they were. I went back to the shop that did the fitting and we had to reposition (spin) the shaft several times to get the original position but it fixed the vibration issue.

These creatures are fussy…

I had a noisy vibrating shaft which was caused by a seized universal joint.

I actually had that fixed but not balanced which I think became my problem and the vibration remained yet was only present between 85 and 95 km/hr - either side of this was smooth.

Anyway, I installed a shaft that Uwe had built and the vibration is long gone.

However, to fully get rid of the vibration I had to replace my near 20 year old tyres with new ones - that was an instant fix!

That is an interesting fix Harold! I would have guessed if it was all balanced it would not matter.

Just on this topic, what is the best source for new prop shafts these day’s? And does anyone sell (original style) shafts? (not exchange)?
Also do any vendors sell the “correct” universal joints to re-build the original shafts?

Thanks

Peter Coe said Rudi did some work on his propshaft but at the time, not road tested. Maybe Peter can update any progress/resolution?

Thanks Ken, much appreciated.
I think shops only do exchange on original styles, but I would want to keep mine for rebuilding
Yes, Rudi will most likely have parts, but sounds like the general (agricultural) universal. Not sure if the original ones are even available.

Re prop shaft. Mine seized on way back from Cape York. I took it off and left it with Rudi. He put in new PTOs and tapped a grease nipple in. He said that this is the best solution for 4WD as it ensures that water can’t get in. Or if it does, the grease will push it out. I went back up to Bribie and he put it back in for me along with a few other jobs. Unfortunately on the way home it started to vibrate at 70 kph. I took it off when I got home and last week Rudi dropped by on his way to Sydney and took it to check. He left me with another spare that he has repaired the same way. Due to a ruptured finger tendon I have not been able to put it on yet. Will keep you posted. Peter

Thanks Peter, interesting , but I guess not unusual to have vibrations! I hope Rudi finds the cause
Sorry to hear about the tendon, I hope it gets better quickly!

I have not looked far, but they seem to be hard to get

My prop also vibrating like crazy whenever I went 95kmh+ when I first got my Syncro. Got the u-joints replaced and the thing balanced and it helped about 85%.
But when I trashed the old 14” rollers and fitted Audi 15” with KO2 tyres, it tots went away. Definitely check your wheels/tyres/balancing!

It’s very interesting. I had been using Rudi’s spare propshaft that he lent me and it worked like a charm. No vibration at all. It was only when we swapped mine that he had refurbished back in that I had issues. He has taken mine and lent me another that he has refurbished. Unfortunately I have not been able to put it in as yet. Have a damaged finger and also my van has just gone in to have the pop top taken off and refurbished, and a large rust hole fixed. Will be a few weeks.
