Proud new Syncro owner with problem to solve

Well I did it. Found a great syncro and purchased it. The beast is an 89 trakka syncro with
diff lock and extras too numerous to mention and with only 150,000 kms (original) -
great condition, deep metalic blue. It's been cared for really well. It runs really well too bar
one thing - I'm having trouble with first and second gear.

It's like this. I engage 1st (and sometimes 2nd) and much of the time it feels like I'm in 3rd
or 4th. Except I'm definately not. If I selesct reverse first I can get it into 2nd OK, and
usuall 1st. Same if I engage G (crawl). i drove it a long distance home basically without 1st
and 2nd gears. I thought it was just me at first but its not. Any ideas?

Cheers
Murray
Murray,

Very pleasing to hear that you have found a Syncro.  I have never had to look at my gearshift but this sounds like no more than correcting the adjustment of the linkages.  If you haven't got yourself a copy of Bentleys yet, get one.   If you can't get one immediately, let us know where you live and we might be able to find someone close by who has a copy.

Thanks Les,

I'm in Sydney, Rozelle, and no I don't have a copy. I'm also no especially mechanically minded - although I'm not completely hopeless if the instructions are clear and would certainly have a go.... So I'd happily borrow a copy and have a look myself before I visit my long-time VW mechanics.

Cheers Murray

OK, calling all Sydney and near Sydney Syncronauts, can Murray meet with someone who has a Bentleys to hand?

Thanks.

Murray,

You have unfortunately picked the weekend that many Syncro owners have gone to Narooma to a VW get-together.  If we don't get a response to this, I might be able to copy and e-mail the relevant bits of Bentleys direct to you..

BTW, where might I best purchase a Bentleys in the longer term?

Cheers Murray

Try doing a google search for< Bentley publishers> good to hear you found a syncro with goodies well done . Does not sound like gearbox I agree with Leslie . Could be worn  bush in gear leaver end of linkage not sure but T2 had similar issues . Like to hear more about the vehicle Murrray price etc . Look for gear selector in syncro messages you can search for specific comments in search box on message page

Murray,

Without having driven your vehicle, I am taking an educated guess, based on your description, and it sounds likely that the shift linkage is causing the problem.  At such a low mileage, it is more likely to be adjustment than wear but it would need to be inspected.  The shift linkage on the Syncro is common to the T3, so any good VW workshop would be able to set it correctly.  When the Sydney and near-by Syncronauts come back from Narooma, someone is sure to point you towards a reliable VW workshop.

The Bentleys manual is available through various good technical bookshops and someone will probably give you a local source.. There is a distributor in Dandenong, Victoria, through whom you can order, but let's see what the local Syncro owners come up with.  Whilst your mechanical skills might not be all that high, the illustrations in Bentleys are very good and you can learn a lot from them.  As an aside, this manual is the original VW manual, printed by Bentleys (US) under an agreement with VWAG.

thanks for the advice Pete,

At least it sounds as though my problem might not be too serious.

The van; Its an 89 with a full trakka fit out, 150,000ks, it has great (swivel passanger) trakka seats with armrests (like the caravelle but even more comfy), the pop top has solar panels to charge twin batteries, it had a full service history, two owners, and I had to travel to Swan Hill in Victoria to bring it home but I think it was worth it. It was actually on ebay last week but was not listed under 4wd. It cost me $16,500 (after making an offer).

The condition is excellent with no rust at all, a few deepish stone chips etc... It has a rear luggage carrier that mounts to the tow bar, matching bull bar (the car is deep metalic blue), it came with a shower annex (back) and flyscreened side annex. Interrior cupboards are off white.

Thanks for this Les,

i've been a long-time T3 caravelle owner (and a couple of previous T2s) so i've got a good mechanic (but in Newcastle where I'm originally from). I intend giving him a look at it Tuesday. However, we are also heading up the coast (to Noosa) that day so i'm hoping that its something he can fix quickly - fingers crossed. It made it from Swan Hill like it so i don't think I'm doing more damage. i think you might well be on the right track with your diognosis though.

Murray,

You won't damage anything in the gearbox so long as the gearbox is not making noises.  Having previously owned T3's, you will know if there are any extraneous noises.  Fortunately, the Syncro is low-geared, so you will get away with what you are doing without straining anything.

When you get around to it, you might post a pic of your acquisition on our website.  Please also get yourself on the Simple Phone Book in the database.  This helps considerable when people are trying to get in touch with each other.

If you will be on e-mail while you are away, it will be worth checking after the NSW Syncronauts get back from Narooma.

As an aside, my family used to go to a small and remote spot for holidays in the late 30' and through the 40's.  We loved it, but whenever I told anyone where we had been, they would furrow their brow and ask "where's THAT?"  It was, of course, Noosa.

Hi Les

My folks are also long-time noosa visitors - having driven up there on a surfing safari for
their honeymoon. I've been going there since I was born (I'm 41). Dad said there was one
shop in the main street when they first went so i can imagine what it was like way back.

Les,

I've been messing with the linkages and i do think you're right. While I didn't fix it I've noted the when in 1st its actually in 3dr. When in 2nd its engaging third. So you can go from 1st to 3rd and its the same gear. Seems something just not pushing accross far enough.

Murray,

It's best not to fiddle with it.  Take it to your Newcastle mechanic and he will probably reset it in minutes because he knows where it should be.  When you get a copy of Bentleys, carry it with you; that tactic has got a few people out of trouble on the road.  Your Newcastle mechanic will undoubtedly work from the same manual.

Send me your private e-mail address and I will send you some pics of my Syncro - which just happens to be an 89 Trakka!  (It used to be on the home page of the website but I took that off in order to put Rick's plug for the Tour 07 up.)

Congrats Murray, sounds like you got a beauty for the price, especially
the diff-lock and no rust.

I agree the problem you have with the gears sounds like a gear selector
issue, not gearbox.

Heh while you're passing me sometime up or down the F3, pop in to my
place will you, we can ogle Syncros ... hahaha

Cheers.

Hi Murray

Congrads on the new beast. I have slowly become specialized in the
Syncro transmission if you ever need advice or a rebuild. I can make
it like new if you ever need & am located just south of Ulludulla.

Basically the arm that sticks out of the transmission to change the
gears has six positions G, Rev, 1, 2, 3, 4 plus neutral.
The arm pulls in / out in three positions. Each of these then has 2
positions rotating either forward or back with neutral in the middle.
Understanding this, and then operating the shifter, you can quickly
work out what is at fault.

Peter Kestel

i've been a long-time T3 caravelle owner (and a couple of previous T2s) so i've got a good mechanic (but in Newcastle where I'm originally from).

Cheers Murray
