The Puch badges came on all syncros pre 1990.
Syncros were built by Steyr Daimler Puch (SDP). The Puch badge was
only used on special Syncros in the European but apparently on regular
Syncros in a few markets. My Syncro 16 came with one as did the other
2138 Syncro 16's. The badge came in chrome finished plastic and
unfinished black plastic. The latter was for use mostly on military
vehicles.
The badges are 'open design' which allows the paintwork underneath as
background. They are NLA from VW but a few people have made reasonable
copies in both epoxy resin and brass. The common characteristic
between the reproductions is they have a solid background. Some years
ago, a listmember from the worldwide Syncro List sent me a bunch of
the resin variety. Quality was very good as was the price.
Coincidentally, said fellow was in OZ. Unfortunately, I was going
through an intermediary so never got the contact info for the maker.
Fast-Forward in Canada used to sell brass replicas of the badge as
well. Sadly, they are no longer in business.
Perhaps the person in OZ who made my badges can be found. Or maybe
someone can loan their badge for replicating duties. The original
badges are attached with very fragile pins from the backside. Removal
will often break the pins.

This may be true for OZ Syncros but not Syncros in the US or other
parts of Europe including Austria and Germany.
We never got the badge at all in the US. I've owned a few Syncros
originally delivered in Germany. The only one with the Puch emblem was
my 1989 Syncro 16.
As an alternative though a bit over-the-top, you can use a front badge
from the Pinzgauer 710. It shows the Steyr and Puch logos merged on
the side to form the badge. I luck upon a bunch of these and sold the
extras to fellow Syncronauts. I keep mine on a display shelf. Looks
too obnoxious large for most areas of the T3 IMHO.

I've just finished searching the web to see what is available around the world concerning PUCH badges. I found a number of alternatives ranging across new, old, metal and bendy plastic, stickers, etc.
I understand from Les, the original syncro PUCH badge is 44mm in diameter.
In the end I found and opted for a quite attractive but more subtle, discrete size which I am very happy with and reasonably priced and available here in OZ ... walked into the shop today and bought 3 over the counter.
BenT, in my search I didn't uncover any PUCH badges manufactured in Australia but the badge I did decide on interestingly is designed and manufactured by a badgemaker firm near Auckland, New Zealand, as they say .... just across the ditch! How good is that Ralph!
See the attached pics. It is 23mm diameter, is silver coated metal, the design is handpainted, resin coated and oven baked twice. I've also used one to decorate the vacant front difflock switch position ... see pic ... a perfect fit. All that needs to happen first is to remove the pin and enclosure from the back and then it can be fitted to any flat surface. I expect a decent quality automotive double sided adhesive tape would be sufficient to hold in place, much the same as my rear door badges are.
Cheers.

Subject: Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Puch badges
Ben,
Syncros were built by Steyr Daimler Puch (SDP).

BenT

Nice.
It looks much like the one available from http://www.bullihütte.de/details/ puch-emblem. htm
A steal eh at a mere 20 euro EACH plus shipping!
There are times when we should foster NZ trade. This is one of them!
Cheers.

Hi Ken,
I have a badge (not on my syncro) that Gordon Craig gave me when he visited Oz. The photo (on a10mm X 10mm grid) is attached and the badge is 23mm in dia.
Not sure if this is a replica or original.

Gday BenT and Ralph,I've just finished searching the web to see what is available around the world concerning PUCH badges.
Cheers.

With all the lastest places, searching has never been easier. Look now! Looking to move this spring?
Yurik, Ken,
This is the one fitted to my Syncro and matches the others that I see on the early Australian sold Syncros.

The Day of the Volkswagen, Victoria , 2009, went very well. Vehicles on display were:
- Francesca Coles
- Gary Cookson
- Hartmut Kiehn
- Les Harris
- Mark Kofahl
- Michael Roberts
- Roger Bell
- Theo Weiss
Mark Boys was there but without the famous Australian Safari double cab, which is having a gear box rebuild.
- Everard Hoffman came without his Syncro and there is just no tenable excuse!!
- Andy Sinclair was there without Syncro as he too is rebuilding his gearbox.
- New member John Gallacher was there; John is looking for a Syncro to buy.
New Member Greg Esposito was there and with a tale to tell. He bought a very good Syncro at a good price from far north Queensland . It needed a couple of things done to it before he put the money on the table and they were done locally – apparently by a bunch of drunken baboons. On the way back, both “repairs” failed and he came within a hair’s of losing the engine and losing at least a drive shaft. After all this, Greg didn’t want to bring it to the DOTVW until he has done a thorough check of the vehicle. I will leave it to Greg to describe these events.
Phill and Joanne Lander flew down from Sydney . Phill arrived with his amazing knowledge and a bundle of CDs and DVDs. Everyone got a chance to talk to him and all benefited.
The venue was packed all day and the VW Club of Victoria is now actively considering looking for a new venue that lends itself better to the nature of the day. The Cranbourne Racecourse is good but the layout is not very helpful to the nature of the DOTVW.
Getting into the place was under a new system this year that failed very badly. Andy Sinclair phoned to say that he was in the queue and it was a very long time before he appeared. In fact, when he phoned, he was halfway between Grant Street and the traffic lights on the South Gippsland Highway . When he called, the VW traffic was backed up all the way to the lights!
Thanks to all who attended and let’s hope for a bigger attendance of Syncros (ie, all gearboxes in the vehicle and running).
