Thanks for the intro Les,
So the story starts with me haggling the seller down $6,000 and doing something I never thought I would do, buy a car over the phone/internet, but these kind of actions seem necessary to get your hands on a syncro. The car was in cairns so I flew up, did the deal in the airport car park and started driving south (3,200kms). The first problem hit 10kms from wallgett. I accelerated to get past a slow moving harvester and smoke starts to bellow from the back of the car. I pulled over to find that when the muffler was replaced (a week before pick up) the tech had put the lhr engine mount bolt straight into the oil filter and it took a couple of thousand k's to rub through. After a lift to town, hardship trying to find a oil filter that would fit and taxi ride back to the syncro I was soon on my way. The next issue came about 200kms out of dubbo. Lots of noise from the rear end and I found  the also new lhr outer cv loose. All the grease leaked out and one bolt was broken. With no tools I kept driving to Dubbo. Needless to say the noise at this stage was horrendous. I was down to 5kmh and found a garage that would help. With no part available we pulled out the old joint and were horrified to find it was fitted back to front and had silicone on the mating surfaces! We cleaned it replaced the 6 balls with better second hand ones and packed it with a heavy fuchs grease. She coasted silently all the way to Melbourne. I now have her up on stands, with a new cv joint going in on the weekend with a set of a/t tyres. If you are interested it is a 5/92 (one of the last) Build, rear diff lock full camper. As I write the previous owner still has the car listed on the Drive.com site so have a look.

Ah, the dreaded brain fade!!  I had mentioned John, which probably means that I have forgotten someone else.  And we are still waiting for Greg’s account of getting his newly purchased Syncro back for FNQ, which is something worth waiting for.

Hi Greg and welcome to the list and the joys of Syncro ownership. I just found it on drive, looks a cracker.

I bought mine interstate, sight unseen also. Not as eventful a trip as yours but at least you made it without any major damage considering the faults the lovely mechanics built in for you.

Cheers

Gday Greg,

Welcome aboard the Oz Syncro mother ship forum.

Suffice it to say after looking at the pics ..... I reckon you stole it at $17k!

Very nice find indeed, as they say, being in the right place at the right time (Drive.com) certainly worked in your case.

Enjoy, I'm sure you will.

Cheers.

Greg,

Even though you had a few problems - you have a great vehicle and you got to do one of those awesome trips fly across the country - buy and old Volkswagen bus and drive it home - well done.

Enjoy the ride - I know we all do.

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Greg

Thanks for the trip report - you'll enjoy your Syncro Camper for many years to come I have no doubt. I know I very much enjoy the journeys and camping, having just done both with over 2000km to VIC and back.

Regards
Mark.
