re: German decouplers from USA

Hi all,

I  have those panic handles in my Tristar all 3 of them (none on drivers side) the maplights look great they are individually switched, and there is hardly any lumens coming out of them....

Of all options I find the P/S  the most sensible one and its relatively easy to retro fit it.    hartmut

Over the shoulders grab handles were available on the Tristars. They
were in any colour you wanted as long as it was black. ;-)

Said handles are spring loaded and fold up out of the way much like
the ones found in Mk2 Jetta/Bora. They also feature an individual
maplight for the one over the driver's door as well as for each and
every passenger. Plus there's a coat hook on each as well. Not like
the driver would want to hang a coat on his side.

Upon closer examination, I determined they are virtually identical to
the units found in the Audi 100/200/5000 turbo cars (aka Typ44 body).
The only difference is colour. I have only found the Audi units in
beige or gray.

Hartmut,
Ok done deal ..... I'll fix your digital clock ... you fit a P/S system to mine ok. Sounds fair.

Ken,

My old man had power steering fitted to his syncro about 4 years ago as he said with age (his) the parking and tight turns in a syncro were becoming too difficult.

I think it cost him about $1200.00 and he says it is worth every cent.

I have driven his van pre-power steering with standard 14 inch factory wheels and tyres (his van has very low mileage) and it is a different vehicle with power steer.

I also remember the grab handle in an old Mitsubishi L300 4wd van I had prior to the syncro and its handle was placed on the dash just in front of the passenger. The boss used to hang onto that pretty tight when off-roading but it was in a great place to crack your head open in a frontal collision - luckily that never happened.

Go the Power Steer option Ken you'll love it even more than your de-coupler and Christmas tree shade device.

Cheers,

I doubt if anyone in Australia new about them being available. Now the big thing about the syncro was the automatic operation of the VC. That was the selling point. If you said that they could have a selectable 4WD they would say "why?"

Ken Why not ? the reason being as Phil stated no one new about the VC problems it was in 1996 and some 220,000 klms later when mine went tight, didn't know what happened the first time it happened to me doing a tight turn in a car park after a long trip

Arrrrgh ...... Harvesting - last time I did that was when I was 9 yrs old @ my dad's Mate's farm in South Oz @ Port Lincoln.

Ken, Andy who is in this forum can answer that question better. In his
case, he was replacing a defective PS unit IIRC. The other two were on
2wd's. I know at least one fellow completed the project. Never heard
from the other one.

It's not a difficult project at all once you have all the parts. I've
the conversion at least twice in WBX T3's. Now I am looking to add to
my AAZ (1.9td) equipped Syncro 16 Doublecab.

Have added these to my Dokas. Most of the later T3's sold here (88-91)
got them as standard equipment. Unfortunately, removal from a donor
vehicle requires removal of the door first. As a consequence, most are
left on as they get sent to the crusher. It's simply not worth the
time IMHO.

Keep in mind that these were also intended for use on the later models
with flowthrough ventilation. The door vents are sealed behind the
grill and rearmost windows have plastic vents on the ends.

The noise reduction is difficult to notice IMHO. It would be waste of
time if you leave your windows open due to lack of AC or non-working
one.;-)

Regards,

BenT
There is a Syncro Tristar at my friends shop now. It has a grab handle over the driver's side as well.

As for the light output, I find them useful enough. Have them in my Audi as well.

On Syncros with diff locks, I noticed on the control panel under the dash, there is a diagram of the under-carriage and wheels. The green dots for the diff-locks and a 3rd one in the middle, which is possibly for the decoupler if installed.

__,_

correct. That third dot has actually a bulb holder behind it and is prewired for the decoupler. My kit includes the light bulb for this green dot, and there is a hidden connector in the wheelwell on every syncro I have seen that gets plugged into the decoupler. when the decoupler engages, it lights up.
I have just forwarded Les a page from the german syncro manual that came with all syncros showing the decoupler switch and explaining the use (in german though).

Theo,

Could you please tell me if this is a VAG publication.  If it is, could you please tell me the title and the VAG publication number.  Without this, I have no way of identifying what you are talking about.

Les

Les,
My Transporter Book is a self-help book, not an official repair manual like the Bentley. However it has the same pictures with the little framed number in the bottom right-hand corner.
There is little information on transmission. They advise that repairs should only be done by professional workshop. There is one page on the AWD System. They talk about how the VC works and then about the engageable 4WD in which the front transmission can be permanently disengaged. There is sketch of all the drive-trains which show a VC and a decoupler and explained that you can have of one or the other system.
There is a right hand-corner framed number of 34-1684.
Because of copy rights, I am reluctant to post this page in the forum.

This engageable 4WD transmission is also listed in the EDKA Illustration 41-50, thanks to Phil.

On Syncros with diff locks, I noticed on the control panel under the dash, there is a diagram of the under-carriage and wheels. The green dots for the diff-locks and a 3rd one in the middle, which is possibly for the decoupler if installed.

Perhaps the engageable 4WD was only ever available in Germany .

Cheers,
Theo

Hartmut,
No worries. I'll do the hard bits ok, you help by doing the easy bit.
I'll undo the hinge bolts, you hold the door close by (defying gravity!) so the speaker cables don't have to be disturbed while I screw in the 3 screws to hold the strip, then reinstall the hinge bolts. I reckon say an hour for my hard bits .... how are you going holding the door??  haha

Ken, when you come up for a visit, you can install my draught strips, the exercise is good for you. I bought the strips from Bernd Jaeger.    hartmut

Gday BenT,

mmmmm ..... presently P/S isn't even on my todo priority list. I'd be curious though as to how your recipients faired with their P/S projects.

BenT, something else I'd like to ask you about please ... do the US delivered vanagons have fitted as a matter of course the extra rubber draught/weather/ noise excluder strip (fitted here to caravelle models only) that is vertically fastened to the front pillar with 3 screws in the space between the front pillar and front door edge?  I've yet to see any on The Samba from parted out vanagons. Any thoughts on this?

On the subject of PS, I once again have access to NOS (New Old Stock) RHD PS racks. There is virtually no market for them in the US so the importer I selling them quite reasonably. I sent one to Andy in Ceduna and two other fellows in other parts of OZ.

Cheers,

Ben, I see you're spoilt with P/S onboard. Make a man of you and try offroad driving without P/S like mine ... haha
A few years ago, wreckers told me the complete used P/S setup could be had for around $900. Not sure if it included the steering rack though. Then of course it would have to be installed for $$$$$$$$$$$$ . I didn't bother.

Les,

I know my English is not the best but I would have thought you could make sense of it. So, I will try again.
My book is a self help guide like the Gregory Series in OZ. Not a VAG publication. However, it uses the same picture format as the Bentley, where all the pictures and sketches have a number on the bottom right-hand corner, which I presume is some sort of VW catalogue number.

Cheers,
Theo

Theo,

Thanks for the response, you have answered the primary question – the publication you quoted is not a VAG publication.  We have been trying to pin down the official references to the disengageable 4WD option and we have now done so fairly comprehensively.  We know that it was a VAG option from the start of production but, since we can’t find any VAG sales brochures that mention it, we must conclude that VAG never pushed the option.

How many options did VAG push?

Towbars, radios, mudflaps, air-con?

good morning,

some of you have already ordered decouplers from me, and it proved that the paypal thing is expensive for me and complicated for some of you as paypal is less common in Australia. American banks are lousy at bank transfers, thats why I decided to take Euro payments in my german bank account. my revised offer is euro 690 shipped (note that as of today, US$1000, my original offer, would be euro700, so this is actually cheaper). that is also cheaper than the competition if you include shipping, and I insure the packages. the core deposit will be euro 180, less than half of the competition.
I have now earmarked two cores to go back and forth to Australia.
Of course I carry all the other accessories as well, like billet shaft, stainless actuator rods and sleeves for the lockers, actuator brackets. I will match the competitions price on all these with a decoupler order, but it is not profitable for me to ship these out to australia by themselves, except the billet shaft.
I will pmail the bank account info when you order.
Please send your order emails or any inquiries directly to decouplers@gmail.com

I hope this works for all of us.

Florian
