Got into the Trakka this morning guess what..... the windscreen has a crack from left to right !!

Anybody got an idea what I’m in for  a new one ?? Anything we need to watch out for ??

It will be one of the bigger jobs as the glass is glued  to the Trakka roof with Silicone...

Hartmut,

Yet another Trakka success story!!

It is hard to believe that an Australian camping conversion manufacturer did not foresee the problem created by bringing the fibreglass top right down to the windscreen rubber.

Broken windscreens are rather common in Australia and what should be a simple screen change is turned into a major operation.

Removing the silicone is a total bastard and more than messy.

This is another example of Trakka’s idiotic and completely amateur piss poor workmanship that ranks right alongside their horror wiring!

Hartmut,
It's the breeding season for magpies, they do get a tad aggressive.

I had mine replaced a few years ago by a local windscreen mobile crowd, did it in my garage .... $200 supplied and fitted. Getting it done at home means you can keep an eye on the proceedings better. The main difficulty they had was getting the top of the screen re-seated into place because of the very close impedement of the Trakka poptop base. They'll need to persevere with it, but they should get there in the end ok.

Take the chance after the seal is removed to closely inspect for corrosion.

I re-used my rubber seal, checked it first though, it was fine. They also injected some "goo" sealant during the reinstall, very yucky stuff to clean up after though. No leaks before or since.

I was told the screens are manufactured in Queensland and was led to believe they normally now come with a legal full tint plus the deeper band tint across the top. The broken windshield taken out had no tint at all. New tinted one is much nicer. You may need to check this tinted model issue first with the supplier/installer, just to be sure they don't bring the wrong one.

Don't use O'Briens, unless you have a bag full of diamonds you can spare.

Cheers.

Ken

Hi Ken,

Went through the O’Briens  experience myself with the 1990 Passat. Never    ever   again. Rather would go without a windscreen.

I will take it out myself to check for rust and decide then how to go about it. Will let you know.

Clean the metal around the rubber seal and polish. This will make the new rubber slide on much easier and protect the paint and stop corrosion. Usr a good quality new rubber and tell the fitter that if he uses any sealant that you will break both his legs.

There are good and bad winscreens. Maybe Steve Muller might know which to use.

Cut some of the old rubber away at the glass side. It will make the glass come out easier. Remove your wiper arms.
