re: Grating Squeek?

Gday all,

Any syncro noise diagnosticators out there please?

For several months I've had a graty squeek noise to do with about 2/3rds
of each revolution of the offside rear wheel.

Best way to hear it is simply find a smooth backroad on a slight slope,
just roll the van very slowly down the slope (barely moving), no engine,
out of gear, offside window open.

Applying the foot or handbrake doesn't alter the noise.

Changing the wheel with an older tyre to another wheel with a new tyre
doesn't alter the noise.

Checking the brake internals for something stationary rubbing against
something turning ... all clear.

Doesn't sound like worn CV's ... I understand they normally have a
clackety clack noise when worn. The end to end axle play is pretty much
normal. I haven't dismantled the CV joints but I have removed both rear
CV and axle sets, inspected them, regreased them both sides and swapped
sets side to side according to syncro site instructions.

Jacked up, the wheel spins freely, the bearings aren't discernably
rumbly or otherwise untoward.

I can't think what else to try. Any other clues/ideas please would be
appreciated. TIA.

Les,

As a last resort, I revisited and remodified the handbrake cabling, then
readjusted the brake and handbrake and then the grating squeek was
..... no more!

Sorted just in time for a 2 week trip out in western/north-western NSW.
What a pleasant relief we no longer need ear muffs!

Cheers.
