All,
Seems to me the oil pump itself rarely gets a mention here.
 
Does that mean it's a relatively reliable WBX motor part, rarely fails?

Oil pumps last longer than engines. When you recondition the engine, you normally replace the pump so they rarely fail. After all, it's just a couple of gears not an engineering marvel!
