Ken,

I'm afraid those are nothing but late model rear windows with the plastic panel that allows flow-trough ventilation.
Almost all late87-91 Vanagons in the US got these. On the plus side, I have seen some folks use these plastic
vents to make a middle slider into a rear slider. They basically cut the middle slider and hide the unfinished end
with these guys.

BenT
Gday BenT,

No that's ok. There have been/still are occasions where Oz syncro owners
are seeking rear windows to replace blank panels etc.

For the locals, I see the same guy also has other ebay items such as a
red caravelle rear tailgate with heated window, also a dashboard.

Cheers.

Ken

Hi Ken,

If that seller woould ship, I'd be asking about that bumper / brushguard monster he has for sale.
It's the perfect way to move the tourists out of the way in San Francisco. =) I made a mistake of
driving in to the "City" yesterday afternoon amidst the sea of tourists and people protesting the
repeal of laws permitting same-sex marriages. It took me some 30 minutes to negotiate about
100 meters.  Then there's that  once-a-month civil disobedience by bicycle riders intentionally
snarling commuter traffic on "Streets of San Francisco" on last Friday of every month. I wouldn't
be the surprised if some disgruntled Syncronaut put one of these 'roobars to help some of the
bikers along. I am not against bikes at all. I have a nice Cannondale with carbonfibre rear swingarm
and full suspension up front fork. I keep it nicely where it belongs -- hanging from the ceiling above
my garage. I wouldn't have time to drive my Syncro otherwise. Besides, I haven't figured out how
to put gas in it. For one these is no place for an ignition key!

BenT
Gday Ben T,

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm ...... anarchy eh in downtown SF .......... bring it
on! haha

Look if you want some peace and quiet, come on over. Bring your 16"
syncro as well though, LHD who cares.

I understand a few Americans have actually learnt that USA is in fact
NOT the centre of the universe and have prudently emigrated to paradises
elsewhere such as we have here.

Let me know when you are arriving, I'll open the gate ok ... haha

Cheers.

Thanks for the invite, Ken. Might that gate double as a very long drawbridge?
I wasn't born in the US so I am well aware that this place is not the centre of
the universe. However, I do often hypothesize that I am. =)

Unfortunately, my significant other was born and raised in San Francisco. I
can't even get her to move away from "The City", let alone outside the US.
I often just laugh it off because despite being 100% Chinese, she can be the
quintessential ugly American when we travel off the beaten path. My idea of
a decent vacationoften require a currency and language change. This leaves
my GF often wondering "...why all these people don't just learn English because
it would just make travelling that much more convenient." She might actually be
fine travelling through OZ if only you guys didn't have "...such hot weather, and
so many crocodiles."

She likes koalas and kangaroos though. As long as they are in a zoo. I almost
forgot, she isn't happy that I prefer to drive the Syncros instead of one of the smaller
German machinery in our garages. She tolerates me and my VW's. That makes her
perfect!

=)

Hi All

My brand new VC arrived today from Germany.

If anyone in Oz is planning on buying one soon i can point them in the
right direction especially as regards the annoying customs palaver.

I am quite surprised at how big and heavy it is, never having seen one
in the metal.

If anyone would like me to bring it to DOVW to marvel at i'd be happy
to.

Gary
Gary,

Please do.  That would make a very good exhibit.  I have already printed up an A3 size exploded view of the VC, so they will work well together.

Ok, it will need a substantial table and a dedicated guard at all times. I've become very attached to it already!

Whilst only 15 months old, Max is obsessed with the Syncro, and in particular, the keys to the Syncro. For at least 3 months he has been carrying them everywhere, and we cannot give him any type of alternate key / keyrings, he knows which is the Syncro key and won't accept anything else.

I assume the same outcome for the VC!

Mark.

I will have onboard my 17month old - Patrick. We have a similar problem!

Maybe i won't bring it, my 4 yr old will want to show how strong he is and carry it around. This always ends with someone getting upset!

A comment could be made ref weight of VC and nature of the tie, however, it shall remain off the record until Saturday night!

There are plenty of hideyholes in a camper Syncro.  Even for 18 month olds, if it comes to that!

Gary,

Please do.  That would make a very good exhibit.  I have already printed up an A3 size exploded view of the VC, so they will work well together.

Hi All

My brand new VC arrived today from Germany.

If anyone in Oz is planning on buying one soon i can point them in the
right direction especially as regards the annoying customs palaver.

I am quite surprised at how big and heavy it is, never having seen one
in the metal.

If anyone would like me to bring it to DOVW to marvel at i'd be happy
to.

Gary

Hi everyone, I am Harry live in Tassie and new to the Group.
I just had my first 4 wheel drive adventure with the Syncro Which I have now for about 9 years, that got me looking on the net. Now I know that I know nothing about the car. That brings me to the point of my Viscous Coupling.I think she is not working properly. I lifted the rear wheels in the air, put a block of timber under the front wheels then started slowly. The front wanted to climb over the timber. If I need to replace the V C, where can I get one?
Thanks Harry

Harry,

That’s what it is supposed to do and shows that it is working correctly.  As the VC ages, it begins operating (transferring drive effort to the front axle) earlier, whereupon it is referred to as being “aggressive”.   An aggressive VC actually has some benefits in terms of handling and particularly braking and is preferred by a lot of Syncro owners.

New and reconditioned VCs are available but you certainly don’t need one yet.

To elaborate on the function of the VC, it is designed to apportion drive to the front axle when there is more than a few percent difference between the axle speeds front to rear.  For a new VC, the difference percentage is around the 5-6 mark; for an aggressive VC, it gets down to the 2-3 mark or less.  At the other end of the scale, it can transmit 100% of the drive to the front axle, a fact that proves very useful to anyone who has destroyed a rear CV joint when they are on a trip.  The dud half shaft can be removed and the vehicle driven home in front wheel drive only.
