Does anyone have an opinion/experience about the validity/usefulness of
these performance enhancement gizmos please?

Ken,

As they used to call Sellers like these "snakeoil salesmen".

Note that this supposedly relative newbie on Ebay all of a sudden has 504 active listings of the same product for just
about any car make you can think of. There is no difference in the product or the claims. In other words, they claim the
same performance upgrade to any type engine regardless of what that engines characteristics are.

I'll bet that this guy will disappear from Ebay as fast as he/she appeared only to reappear as another newbie with another
500 new listings.

Save your money for new air/oil/fuel filter or new spark plugs. That would be money better spent. Let this guy keep his
go fast remedy because last I heard, VW's are compatible with snake oil.

A limiting factor for a "performance" chip on the MV engine is the fact that it has no knock sensor.

The high outputs obtained in modern engines are made possible because the ignition can be continuously advanced to make use of every molecule of fuel vapour.  Knock sensors are now so good that they can hold an engine at a tiny fraction of a degree below knock and get the highest output without damaging the engine.

Since the MV engine does not have a knock sensor, the maximum ignition advance made available by the ECU is a very safe margin below potential engine damage point, which is also a long way below the optimum firing point.  The only way to determine the actual contribution of any performance chip is on an engine dyno.  I would be deeply suspicious of any claims that are not supported by a dyno plot.  In the case of the MV engine, any performance increase would have to assessed on a cost/benefit basis.

You can get a 98RON chip and ratio rockers.
Gday Ben, Les and ALL,

Thanks for the responses, just goes to show the value of asking
questions in this forum and getting the right answers.

I am aware this topic has been discussed here and elsewhere in the past,
I never resolved to do anything about it at that time, maybe it sounded
all too difficult and/or expensive. So seeing the ebay advert this time
motivated me to at least raise the topic again .. case of forwarned is
forearmed is all good eh.

So sorry Mr. snake-oil man, seems your creds, if you had any, have just
bitten the dust.

Cheers.

Ken

Phil I assume you are referring to the chip that Boris used to sell?
Does he still produce them?
There was considerable discussion about that combination on the US Vanagon and Syncro
sites 8 or 9 years ago. With much favorable comment I might add.

Cheers,

Andy.

Yes.

I think so.

Do not buy from the US as they may not work here.
C'mon Phil, spill the beans - why may a US chip not work here in Au?

ECUs can be different for different countries even with the same engine prefix. A friend of mine bought a chip for a 1990 Passat from Neuspeed and when he put it in the car wouldn't even start.
