re: re-using oval shape air filter

Gday ALL,

I've been toying with the idea that re-using the $70 plus oval shape air
filter is worth investigating.

In the files section, I've just read Hartmut's profile story on his
Tristar and lo and behold, he says he's only ever bought 2 air filters,
he uses compressed air and a vacuum to clean them and so re-uses them
over and over.

For my T2 kombi, 27 years ago I bought my 2 only "Donaldson" washable
air filters. They simply get washed in a solution of warm water/powder
detergent, rinsed thoroughly and dried, then re-used.

The paper element in the syncro air filter doesn't look a whole lot
different to the paper element in the "Donaldson" element so I'm going
to try a similar wash and dry process and see how that goes.

Has anyone else done this or something similar and can relate their
experiences with it? TIA.

Cheers.

Ken
Hey Ken,

I bought a K&N filter from Repco for about $120. Also bought a
'recharge / cleaning kit' that I am yet to use.

These things sound really good, supposed to flow a lot more cleaner
air, used on race cars etc. I found that it improved my syncro's
performance on cold starting, and stopped the very occasional stalling
on cold starts that I was experiencing.

:) Sam

Sam,

I'm trying to SAVE money, not spend it ..... haha

Touch wood, so far I've had no hard starting issues etc. Still,
interesting. Ta Sam.

Cheers.

Hi Ken,

I have been using, for the last 10 years, FINER FILTER, which has an
inner core and an outer oily
foam band which needs to be serviced every so often. But, I am not
sure if they are still available for
the Syncro.

Part No: FF4294 $ 80.00 ( 1997 prices)
Spare Outer band FF4294B $17.50

By the way, a friend of mine got rid of the whole filter box and
installed the K&N filter system.

Cheers

Theo
Gday Theo,

Thanks for your input. Yes I've heard of but never seen the Finer
Filter, sounds messy but probably works well.

However, modifying the air filter system isn't on my priority list at
the moment, more the case of hearing from anyone who may have re-used
the stock standard oval air filter and what they thought about such an
option.

Cheers.

Ken

Ken,
I have had my '89 Caravelle for 10 years and put over 180,000 K's on it, I have never replaced the air cleaner, and I am sure it is the original one, I just blow it out and put it back in, it also has the standard pre cleaner fitted which catches a lot of the bigger bits of dirt. I don't use it on dirt doads though.
Regards
Dave

Gday Dave,

Well thanks for that, very reassuring and looks then like I can give it
a go to.

I've already done a warm water wash with a special cleaning detergent as
stated in a previous post. The wash water ended up quite muddy looking.
After the wash and rinse, the water was as clear as.

For dirt roads, my procedure should be to check and clean more
regularly, same as the debris collector, particularly straight after
some dirt driving. Terrific. Ta.

Cheers Dave.

Ken

Yes Ken you should be able to blow it out OK. You just have to use some common sense. If it still looks dirty or worn, replace it. I've still got my original and have cleaned it many times.
