re: Red dash light blinking

Les,
Just to let you know I had a call from John Figgis tonite (Saturday), he and Grace are presently ensconced on the Melbourne-Tassie car ferry, arriving Tassie 6am Sunday.

He travelled from home in Sydney ok but said the red dash light started blinking today, found he was low on coolant but in the short time he had left before boarding the ferry, couldn't do much investigating at all and so far, couldn't trace fault or see coolant loss evidence on the ground. I guess it will be crunch time tomorrow to see what might develop and being Sunday anyway, makes things a bit awkward getting assistance or parts.

Other than the blinking light, he said so far he's not having any problems at all motor wise, except he did say he was mystified why it was he reckoned he could blow and suck air through the blue expansion bottle screw cap. But the coolant hasn't blown back to the overflow tank, no bubbles in the coolant, no water coming out the exhaust pipe.

Anyway he asked did I know about any syncro services or parts suppliers in Tassie. I said I'm unaware of any. Are there any?

He asked me for and I gave him your contact details just in case. I also gave him contact details for Volkspower and Volkwerke in case he needed parts shipped asap to Tassie.

So if he rings you, you know some background ok. Any other ideas?

Cheers.

I'm going over to Launceston by plane next Thursday afternoon(28th) and coming back(with my car) from Devonport sailing to Melbourne 9am next morning if its any help for taking spare parts etc. I'd need to know asap as I haven't booked any non carry on luggage plus have a pretty full schedule before I go if need to collect them. My son is currently white water rafting down the Franklin with his new wife so can't ask him about suitable local VW service.
Cheers
Roger

There is a VW dealer (Jackson VW Cnr Esplanade and Lower Charles Sts Launceston phone 03(yes same as Vic) 6323 7030 close to the river if John is coming into Launceston from Devonport.(about 90km) They also have a Hobart dealership. I might remember seeing a VWspecialist in relatively nearby to Devonport Deloraine at the top of the hill but don't count on this old bloke's memory and have a good look round Devonport before you leave as there are not any towns of equal size until Launceston.
Sounds to me like a waterpump on the way out. When mine went I topped mine up with distilled water from a supermarket when I had to limp along after using up all the coolant I was carrying. Good luck and contact me quickly if you want me to bring something.

I was hoping that some of our Tasmanian members might have come on line with this one because we so far have no recommended workshop information for Tasmania .

We have Adam Edwards in West Hobart , Alex Damen in Devonport, Harry Schrepfer in Deloraine and Phil Lee Wynyard.  Do any of you have knowledge of good VW workshops in Tas?

In terms of advising John, diagnosis by email is not easy

Les and ALL,

The only Tassie enquiry link I can find is via the VW Association of Tasmania. Goto: http://www.vwtas.org/
Perhaps an email enquiry re Tassie service/parts outlets could be made to the Secretary/Treasurer at pandpcurran@ozemail.com.au

As Roger says, there are two VW authorised service/parts centres at:

Jackson Volkswagen Cnr Esplanade & Lower Charles Streets Launceston 7250 Phone: 03 6323 7030

Jackson Volkswagen 250 -270 Murray Street Hobart 7001 Phone: 03 6238 3300

Maybe Tassie authorised VW service centres on the Apple Isle have a good attitude to classic Veedubs. Who knows.

Yes it'd be nice to get Apple Isle members feedback here about any Tassie independent VW service/parts suppliers.

I've not heard again from John Figgis. He's a "can fix it with fencing wire" sort of bloke so he may be ok.

Ken,

Let’s hope that he had no further problem.

I followed the sponsor’s links in the VW Tas site but only one came up as looking like a workshop and that one didn’t mention VW except for the VW insignia on the building in the picture.  They might still have a dedicated VW place somewhere.

Overall, it would be preferable to keep the Workshop register as places known to members as having an encouraging track record with at least the T3 if not the Syncro.
