Re: Remediate ends of long nylon coolant pipes - procedure

Hi Richard and all,

Just added several pdf files to the forum for downloading concerning the long coolant pipes - my version for remediation of their end joints using the GoWesty Repair Kit, completed back in 2012.

Look for docs located at: ... Files/Syncro Cooling System/Nylon Cooling Pipes/

Might help.

Cheers.

Ken

Ended up removing the two long plastic coolant lines, I think for now I will keep them in and will look to get stainless at some stage. Photo shows both ends of one pipe. I assume the steel support should be fully inside the pipe? The one hanging out I can just press back in?

I have a full kit of new hoses, but most seem (relatively) easy to get to with the engine in, so I might leave the old ones in for now and swap them out when I get a set of stainless pipes.

I noticed one of the plastic pipes is dated 1989, so I assume original, the other dated '94 so must have been replaced at some stage. Probably half the hoses look to have been replaced at some stage, so the system overall seems OK for now.

.

Thanks Ken, great write up!! Looks like a good solution, and I am guessing it's stood the test of time.

Richard

OK, looks like my hands are tied anyway, the go westy kit is out of stock until late September! So the new plan is to reuse the pipes, they are basically sound, and look to get stainless pipes sooner rather than later (just means another dump of coolant, this is becoming expensive!). I will put off replacing all the rubber hoses until then also.

Not everyone will agree, but I have been using Nulon red coolant, saves a fair bit of money, and has worked for me.  Also a few clean buckets you can reuse a fair bit of your coolant instead of it all going down the drain.  I would have to sell the house the amount of coolant leaks I've had if using more expensive coolant.  getting close to every pipe replaced.

PS my favourite new toy is this

Hi Sam,
I totally agree. Assuming the coolant mix is still good, collect all that's possible, run it through a fine screen filter and then reuse it.
Every van should own that pressure pump!

Rich, years back i secured the endpipes with pop rivets. The hose will go over them thus ensures no exit of coolant. Used that setup for at least 10yeares eventually replacing with ss.
The hot ss pipe supports the radiator to quite some extend with cooling.

Thanks Hart, sounds good. Yes, I guess the SS pipe would shed some heat also.

If time permits, I was thinking I can make my own collar similar to the go westy one.

Either way, I am hoping re-suing the pipes will be a short term install until I can get SS.

As always though the list of jobs while the engine and tank are out is growing and time is slipping away!

I am still hoping to install the under rear seat heater while everything is out, but have a couple of parts that are proving hard to find

Anyone know a car that uses an electric solenoid operated heater valve? Economical ones on line are vacuum operated, but that has the issue of installing a vacuum switch and hoses. I don't think running a cable to the rear is practical either.

Hi I have one of these kits unopened didn't need as ss pipes arrive quickly .
If your interested can try and find origins invoice for price

Hmm, sounds interesting Colin.

Only if you definitely do not need it. I can make do with my pipes

Richard
In Darwin returning home tomorrow evening will find packet and hunt receipt early next week

Hi Richard, I got my stainless steel pipes from The Bus Depot in the US about 8 months ago, and it took less than a week for delivery. Gerald.

Thanks Colin :)

Richard

Thanks Gerald, great to know :). Yes most parts I have been getting have been under a week. Budget has copped a beating the last few weeks with all the parts I'm replacing as easy to do while everything is out so the SS pipes will have to wait for now

Richard

Hi Richard,

I use one 5 Litre Bottle of the G12 plus (Purple) cost $79 from Mick Motors + Shipping to the GC.
The rest I make up with distilled water.  Better cooling in AUS heat and keeps the heads happy.
In our Climate it is not necessary to use 50:50 Coolant mix, I think it has been mentioned before.
Coolant is not cheap!  Only use what you need to keep the corrosion to a minimum.

Regards,

That's pretty much what I do, only ~11-12L comes out, so that's fairly close to 50:50.

Certainly not cheap to drop the engine and replacing fluids, buy the time you add in the cost of coolant, powers steering oil, brake fluid (for clutch), GB oil, engine oil. Glad I  didn't; disconnect the Aircon.
