re: RHD syncro accelerator cable

All,
Attached pic shows what looks to me like the correct style of replacement accelerator cable for our Oz RHD syncros, of particular interest is that it doesn't have the round ball type fitting on the cable at the throttle end. Unfortunately it is this incorrect cable that is listed in ETKA and is supplied to us when we order a replacement cable here  ... part no. 252 721 555S . My cable at the throttle end has instead a length of metal circular rod attached (as per the pic).

So does anyone know the correct part no for the cable in the pic that happens to be the style of cable in my syncro and it fits and works correctly? TIA.
Ken
Where is the replacement from? (Tooleys, VW, Repco????)

Phill & All,
The replacement cable is German in origin and was sourced by my local independant VW mechanic/service business. So it seems to me the cable part number/description in VW parts database for Oz is incorrect, as well as the ETKA parts catalogue.

Put it another way, has anyone a replacement cable of the style shown in the pic, you know it fits (i.e., is the correct length & has the correct end fitting at the throttle end as per the pic), and you know the correct VW part number for it? TIA.
Cheers.
Ken

The part number was probably put on by Tooleys. Close enough is good enough for them.

Phill,
Regardless of who typed what on an invoice, part number 251 721 555 S as supplied to me is listed in ETKA as the only RHD cable. It's listed as 3810mm long but with a "ball" type end fitting. See pic no.1. Now the length may or may not be correct but my present cable certainly doesn't have the "ball" type end fitting.

Whereas the cable I was trying to match to existing is one with a circular "rod" end fitting at both ends, see pic no.2. The part number in ETKA that fits this style is 251 721 555 Q but is listed as being for LHD and is 200mm shorter in length at 3610mm than the above-listed RHD part.

So ETKA is totally ambiguous on this issue and as well, the supplier (probably following ETKA or similar) has supplied the wrong part.

So it still begs the question please .... which part number identifies the correct accelerator cable for our RHD Oz MV syncros?

Hi Col,
The number you quote is correct as i have a cable with me which i bought as a spare in 2008 and the number is 252721555S.I paid $75.00 incl GST for it in 2008.If my memory serves me correct i recall being notified that there were only 3 in stock at that time.
Ken,i'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs however with my past experiences in buying various parts for VW's i am almost certain that all Left Hand Drive vehicle part numbers are for eg 251 whilst 252 will be the Right Hand Drive prefix.I stand corrected however if you prove us all wrong. The cable i have has a tapered ball at the end.
Cheers,
Everard

Everard,
My original post on this topic clearly shows the 252 part number ... the latter post number was a typo, sorry about that. Be that as it may, that's not the crux of the issue.

Essentially I am searching for the same like for like 2 x rod ended cable as the one presently installed. My present cable can be adjusted at BOTH ends, the cable with the ball end cannot. Hence my search for the like for like cable and so the specific question posed below.  I do accept the throttle mechanism does accommodate both types. However I see little point opting for a cable that only provides cable adjustment only at the much more difficult to access pedal end when with a like for like cable, cable adjustment is so much more readily accessible and simpler at the throttle housing end in the engine bay.

Cheers.

Thanks Ken for the clarification.I did not see the original email.I just looked at my TYpe 2 1988-1992 Parts catalog and page 075-20 shows the picture of the 3 types of cable listed for the Manual Transmission. The first one on the page is what i received. The second one is what you are referring to.The 3 rd one with  what looks like a hook.Well mate,i do hope you source the one you are lookinig for as VW seems to love confusing the end user with parts numbers and changes over the years.I have not checked my new cable with what is on my 1992 Syncro, however hope that i do not have any issues when it comes to changing the cable.
Cheers,

Ken
I have just last week bought and fitted what appears to be the correct accelarator cable to my RHD Syncro.

Last year I bought what I thought was the correct cable but like you got the ball end version having given the correct part number 252 721 555 . Wouldnt fit so sat on shelf.
Last month dropped into Tooleys with the offending cable which they said was Syncro RHD correct.
Asked them what else they had and was presented with the cable in your attachment with a rod at each end.
Hoped it was right as didnt have measurement so took it.
Turned out to be identical to my old one and fitted perfectly.
Length is 3700mm overall
Part no is 252 721 555 R...as on invoice...so now we have Q S and now R cables
Cost $55
As allways it was their last one.

Part no 252 721 555 S would be for automatic ( see page 30.31 Bentleys) and the new one I have by mistake measures 3815 similar to yours

I still have the removed cable as a spare if you want to call in  and eyeball it.

Good luck Graham

Phill,
Regardless of who typed what on an invoice, part number 251 721 555 S as supplied to me is listed in ETKA as the only RHD cable.

The part number was probably put on by Tooleys. Close enough is good enough for them.

My cable at the throttle end has instead a length of metal circular rod attached (as per the pic).

So does anyone know the correct part no for the cable in the pic that happens to be the style of cable in my syncro and it fits and works correctly? TIA.

There is no drawing of 251 721 555 S on ETKA. If the number is in ( ), then there is no drawing.

Ken

The part number was probably put on by Tooleys. Close enough is good enough for them.

Theo,
Thanks for all that. The example pic I included previously of the "rod at both ends" style cable was purported to be a 251 P model.

It would now be very useful to know what differences there are, if any, between the 252 P and 252 R versions you say you have. Of particular interest would be the comparative overall length of the cables, inclusive of the rod tips. If you could compare everything else as well ... the sheathing and fixing bracket position similarities or differences, all info would be useful to determine suitability as an exact fit or else even a simple modification to enable an exact fit. Theo, could you manage to do this for us please and report back. TIA.

Cheers.
Ken

Ken,

A new folder in the Files would be a good way to wrap this up and many thanks for the effort in unravelling it.

Ken,
There is no difference between 252 P & 252 R. I
laid them next to each other and they looked exactly the same.
The total length is 3700mm give or take 1mm.
I am happy to say I have the right spare cable if I ever should need one.
Phil pointed out another supplier in the
UK "justkampers" who sells VW stuff GEMO brand, that is what I have.

Cheers
Theo
