I assume these are 3rd and 4th gears.
 
I suppose this would tax the magnet on the gearbox drain plug?
 
Is this typical/atypical wear/abuse/unlucky?

My wife managed to shear 2 teeth from second gear which I still have as a memento but it seemed (according to my mechanical engineer father) to be a fatigue failure. These lovely two teeth then decided to move along to the crown wheel & pinion and chew that to death.
 
This could have been caused by the 160 odd bhp the 6cyl suby motor has in comparison to the standard MV motors 80bhp - but who knows?
