Thanks for the highly informative reply.  Yes, I did notice that there was no mention of the Vanagon but I thought that I might have missed something from the outset.
 
VW has always been very timorous about development.  When they built the first 3.0 flat 6 engine, I thought that they might have done an about face but no, true to form, they lacked the courage of their own convictions and scrapped the project after spending a massive amount of money on its development.  I sigh when I think what might have been..... 
 
It is fortunate that we have the Subaru to fall back on....

why do you mention the MV code engine ?
The site you quote is about Digifant Theory and operation.
nowhere on that page does it say anything about Vanago or Syncro,
and Digifant is used on other VW models like say, a Jetta, which has an
inline Four gas engine,
and those ...........the 2.0 ABA I beleive, for example, do use an knock
sensor for sure.
