Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Battery

Skot,

I also be interested, here in Melbourne they quoted me $445 for the same battery.I might even pick one up on my way to Coffs Habour next week.

Cheers

Theo

Theo/ Peter,

The place I got the battery was a warehouse/ wholesaler called Federal Batteries in Ryde.

Their address is Unit D2/ 22 College Street, Ryde
Ph: 1300 133 980

I got the Varta Semi Traction model number 956 002. Make sure you get the 956 002 and not the 955 002 a they are very similar looking yet the 955 is only 60 Amps/ hr and the 956 is the 80 Amps/ hr.

This cost me exactly $335.00 pick up at their warehouse last year in late September.

Not sure if they have gone up since but everything seems to.

Hasn't let me down yet and it sat at a VW show for about 5 hours without moving and without power back up and did not die or stop the fridge working.

I know that's not long but with a decent solar panel set up that would keep you going in the bush for a while.

Cheers,

Skot

Thanks Scotty. Great use of this wonderful forum. First job though is to replace the exhaust. I got all the bits from overseas and will now have the joy of trying to undo very old and rusted bolts. May have to use a more persuasive method than unscrewing them!!!

Hart motors has a lovely new concrete pad just right for this type of work, as long as I am allowed on it. It looks great with hippie colours and swirls as you could imagine.

Cheers, Peter

Federal Batteries in Ryde are very good to deal with.

Federal make very good batteries in euro style. They can be left for months and still start the syncro.

Theos/Peter and all,I replaced my battery last December.I replaced it with the same battery that I bought seven years ago for a panel van(t3),when I owned it,from the same vendor.
I bought it from Globe,Fairford Road,Padstow. It is a Dinn66cca Neutron Calcium,if that means anything. If it lasts another seven years I will be happy.
It cost me $154.55 + GST.
I dont have a camper.

Scott and ALL,

Interesting you mention Federal Batteries at Ryde in Sydney for sourcing Federal and Varta batteries.

Late 2009, Philip Gors from there quoted me $390 for a Federal Euro (DIN 66) AGM type starting battery, model 9AGM48 and if I wanted it from them, I had to drive down to Ryde to pick it up and then drive back. Federal provide only one years battery warranty.

The Central Coast local business, "Tuggerah Lakes Batteries", you may know their promo add ... "You ring - We bring", they supplied and delivered to my home (and also would have installed it in the syncro if I wanted it done) the exact same battery (they sourced it direct from Federal at Ryde) for $280 AND added an extra years warranty, so two in total.

Guess where I buy batteries.

Cheers.
Ken

G'day all,
I've been impressed with the Optima battery that I fitted to my other 4WD about a year ago - it's a fully sealed deep-cycle unit that does double duty as a starting battery and also powers the fridge and other accessories. They are a fully sealed unit that can be mounted in any position, even upside down, and are virtually immune to vibration.

Saves having to fit dual batteries, and the complexity and expense of unreliable dual-charging systems.

The only disadvantages are that they are much heavier than a normal battery [6 times the lead] and more expensive.

Still cheaper than a dual setup, though.

Check out the website at www.optimabatteries.com.au

Distributors are only in the big cities so I had mine delivered straight from the factory.

                                                                               Roger [Beetle] Bayley.

Ken,

I have never heard of Tuggerah Lakes Batteries?

Probably why I didn't use them.

The travel down to Sydney didn't bother me as I was at a building job nearby anyway. I did a thorough search of the internet before I bought my battery and Federal were by far the best.

Battery World in Erina quoted me $485.00 (pick up) for the same battery that Federal charged me $335.00. I was more worried about finding the largest capacity battery that would fit under the passenger seat and how I would actually shoe horn the thing in.

Cheers,

Skot

Scott,
Assuming the battery spaces under both front seats are dimensionally similar (perhaps merely mirror reversed, not sure, never had reason to check), then for those who have the full 360 degree front seat swivel bases (for example an option as fitted to some Trakkas), they enable a taller space underneath so a euro DIN 66 size battery will fit, certainly it does under the drivers seat because that is the size and type battery presently in mine. Scott, not sure how the DIN 66 dimension size compares to your Varta camping battery. The only change I needed to make was to raise the hinged metal battery cover a small amount, easy enough to do.
Cheers.

Ken,

I installed the VW factory swivel seat base at the same time thereby adding some clearance to the issue albeit very minor clearance. It fits as it is a Euro spec battery built in Germany.

Hello Ken,
You must be the bargain hunter of the Syncro forum.Yesterday I picked up
my 80 Amp VARTA battery from TUGGERAH LAKES BATTERIES for $270.
In Melbourne BATTERY WORLD quoted me $445.
Thanks also to Skot for the battery details.
I have also taken on board what Roger Bayley had to say about OPTIMA
batteries. I will give the conventional battery one more go and if not
happy, next time it will be an OPTIMA.
Sent from my laptop. Hope it works.
Cheers,
Theo

Well done Theo.

Hopefully the battery serves you well. You will need to remove your battery flap to fit it but it will clear the seat.

Well done on the battery Theo and I agree it was great work from Ken. Could you let me know the model number of your battery? That would be great.

I sent you an email on Monday when I saw yours to Hart as I knew he had left for Byron. Was just being a good son in law and it was a pity we could not all meet up!!!

Cheers, Peter from Port

Peter,
The VARTA No.956 002 OOO
I got your e-mail but no text only a picture of your new shining
wheel/tyre set-up.

Hi Ken,Skot and Theo and all.

I too received a nice new Varta 80amp deep cycle battery ( 956002 ) yesterday.
Thanks Skot for doing the research on a model that would fit.
Thanks Ken for finding a local supplier and a good price.
Thanks Theo for getting the price down to $270 when I was quoted $300
The battery fits perfectly under the passenger seat. I was even able to close the metal battery cover lid complete with carpet and the seat still slides on its original runners.

I can add to mix by saying that the supplier "Tuggerah Lakes Batteries" (0418883019) will deliver free at that price anywhere betwween Ryde (Federal Batteries) and The Central Coast.

Cheers Graham

I didn't think I had a hope of closing that metal flap - so mine went into the storage shelf for a rainy day.

Should keep the beers cold in the fridge now!
