Dear Hartmut,
Thank you for letting us know the sad news about Les's passing. We shouldn't forget that this forum exists thanks to his dedication and enthusiasm for the Syncro. He put in a lot of hard work over the years to keep it on track, so I hope we can keep it going in the spirit he intended. Condolences to his partner.
Francesca.

Thank you Hartmut for letting me know.
Vale Les. Sorry to hear of his passing, he will certainly be missed.
Les's contribution to the OZ syncro community is unique and unparalleled, we all are now entering a period of change and uncertainty not ever faced before, such a period most already knew was certainly on the horizon .... but just not when.
May he rest in peace.
Kindest regards.
Ken

Thank you Skot. Very nice.
I'm new to all that gear stuff. Usually, they talk about making the 4th
taller.
I'm more interested in having a bit more guts going up a hill or driving on
sand.
Cheers,
Theo

Hi Theo,
All the gears are the same except 1st 2nd were replaced with Weddle gears
which are stronger and a slightly different taller ration than the original
but the Subaru engine takes care of that.
He installed new bearings (better ones) and a bearing strengthening plate
plus changed the low gear housing as it was damaged by dead bearings.
I left the rest the same except the Smallcar bell-housing which I love -
works great and was easy to install. The Subaru starter is much smaller and
hence access to the diff-lock actuator is much improved.
The only issue was a Subaru fault which leaves a gap around the base of the
flywheel that would allow mud and dirt in.
Hence I fabricated a cover from aluminium and sealed it onto the
bellhousing/ engine area. If I need to remove it I will just cut the sealant
with a knife.

Hi Skot,
Rudi is unfortunately still on sick leave. So I will have to wait.
What did you get done to your GB? Change any gears, stronger bearings?
But most important, are you happy with your setup?
Thank you
Theo

Theo,
From my experience - go with Rudi.
I will leave it at that.

Hi Skot,
What about Ron Schmidt ? He's supposed to be the expert on this sort of
work.
Recommended by the SUBARU mechanic.

Smart move Theo.
The water boiler VW boxer engines are really starting to struggle these days
and like to leak - expensive to repair.
The Scoobaru engines are reliable as long as you do timing belts every 100k
kms and regular oil changes.
Best still there are thousands of them floating around in moving Subaru
boxes ready to get parts from. I bought a whole car for $1200 and sold about
$200 worth of parts off it before I took it to the tip (still have the alloy
wheels that came off it to sell).
Get Rudi to do your gearbox - he does a great job :)
Cheers,
Skot

Hi Syncronauts,
I finally made up my mind and put some money down for a Subaru Engine
Conversion plus GB upgrade.
I only hope I will have less hassle than with my LPG conversion. I just want
to hop in turn the key and go.
Quite a few members on this forum have done the conversion and seem to be
happy with it.
Any comments appreciated .
Cheers,
Theo
