Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Ignition switches.

I agree with Hart - Graham - where did you find an ignition switch for $25? That is a bargain basement bin price!

The way Woollies charges for food etc - I would say a VW ignition switch would be around the $300 mark if you purchased one from them and it would be a cheap copy that would fall apart before you even plugged it in.

Hi All

Have just come across a rather strange and I believe rare VW machine.

Despite this being a T3 forum ,I thought that someone (Hart?) may be

interested in a   'T4 Razor Back' .     It is FOR SALE

For those that dont know it, the whole rear section between the independent axles of the rear tray has been cut away and replaced with a seperate floor that can be lowered to the ground , loaded and then raised again all by hydraulic rams.

The owner used it for transporting his Harley.

Last week my syncro had a seniors moment, when my brake pedal  hit the floor with no warning at a traffic light. Quick pumping prevented total disaster, but a chat with my mechanic resulted in "What do you expect after 20 years of abuse?   I spent last Saturday putting in a new master cylinder ( Brax $100 ) with wheel cylinders next on the list.

This is a warning for anyone that hasnt replaced theirs.

On the issue of ignition switches.Ken carries a spare but wants to know how to put it in.

With the help of Bentleys I found that in an emergency you dont actualy need to permanently instal the switch.

Just carry out the following.

1 Carry a spare ignition switch. $25

2 Remove plastic cover (2 screws) around around steering column

3 Pull electrical plug out from back of ignition switch

4 Push same plug into back of new ignition switch.

5 Use key or screwdriver to operate new switch and leave it hanging or tape it up to column.

To permanently instal switch you need a steering wheel puller and a few more fancy tools.

Cheers Graham

the $ 300 price sounds like it would be the entire key and lock cylinder unit...
the metal part.
the 'electrical' part is a small separate white plastic part that sits on the end of the main key/lock cylinder part, secured by one small screw.   -  that part is as low as $ 12. US.

You guys got me wondering if my theory of swapping ignition switch actualy works.
It took me less than a minute to remove plastic cover and swap switches and restart the engine using a slot headed screwdriver.(Arthur Daley eat your heart out) all done sitting in the drivers seat
Re price. Scot mentioned $12 in USA.   Try AutohausAZ they have them reduced from $47.67    to guess what  $4.18 each till July 31
Scot is correct you only need the electric connection part.

Any more offers, the part no is 111905865L and it fits a multitude of VWs

This has a history going back a year or so.  It started when Ben began sending messages that had the “Sent from my Blackberry” automatically appended to the bottom.  On my next reply to him, I added “Sent from my dishwasher” or similar and it has been going on ever since.

A 10 minute drive from your place. Works out of his garage and a T3.
Distributes all around the central coast.Cash only for original VW and Mercedes good quality aftermarket parts.
Yes he does have an ABN
Most prices are what you would find on a US website but without the hassles.
Unfortunately he cant or doesnt want to access much  Syncro stuff.

5 Use key or screwdriver to operate new switch and leave it hanging or tape it up to column.

To permanently instal switch you need a steering wheel puller and a few more fancy tools.

You guys got me wondering if my theory of swapping ignition switch actualy works.
It took me less than a minute to remove plastic cover and swap switches and restart the engine using a slot headed screwdriver. (Arthur Daley eat your heart out) all done sitting in the drivers seat
Re price. Scot mentioned $12 in USA.   Try AutohausAZ they have them reduced from $47.67    to guess what  $4.18 each till July 31
Scot is correct you only need the electric connection part.

Any more offers, the part no is 111905865L and it fits a multitude of VWs

I agree with Hart - Graham - where did you find an ignition switch for $25? That is a bargain basement bin price!

The way Woollies charges for food etc - I would say a VW ignition switch would be around the $300 mark if you purchased one from them and it would be a cheap copy that would fall apart before you even plugged it in.

Oh no Graham, no razor back for us here, enough wheels around the place....But thanks for thinking of me. Where did you get the switch at this price??????? ? Woollies or Aldie maybe???

VAG charged  us $ 80 trade ! Thought it was a tad stiff.....H.

Subject: [Syncro_T3_Australi a] Razor Backs, brakes and ignition switches.

Yes, Les is the original culprit. His dishwasher continually spun messages at my mailbox. I had no choice but to retaliate. The maker of my phone at the time, did not exactly make it easy or obvious to delete their marketing message below my signature line. Broke the Crackberry Bold twice within 6 months. Noticing my frustration was my darling daughter (aka the Monster), decides to give me a Fruitphone for Father's Day. The Fruitphone makes it easy as pie to alter the sig line.

I do enjoy Ben T's "Sent from my ........" having a bit of a go at the lovely I-Phone technology. He is very creative with his sending locations.

I got Ann a fruitphone and she just loves it. She hates manuals, would be no good reading the Bentley, but she has taken to the new phone with ease. I have had to look up a couple of minor things in the manual but otherwise it has been smooth sailing…or is that driving.

Also we hook it up to the house wifi when she is home.

I wonder if I could install it into the dash of the Syncro and hook it into the radio. No…..that would be sacrilege!!!

Peter

Peter ,  sacre blue,   I just discovered that I cannot install one of those engine crank hand start devices like you have got !  My towbar is in the way and does not leave room for the crank handle to be engaged into the pulley nut! So the only device I can start by muscle power is my 10kw VAG/oz Army genset, which I like to switch over to gas ( another project).

Got the new roo bar installed or are you coming over ? FiL Hart

PS  what is the ‘house wifi’?  new name for the dog??

Peter,

I hook up the Fruitphone and the Crackberry to an MP3 capable radio in
my T3 via the Bluetooth interface. No wires. No mess. Goes from car to
car like a streetwalker on Hollywood Blvd.

I use the map app as a GPS instrument. It's not as convenient as a
dedicated GPS but it has gotten me out a few jams

;-)

Isn't that the Aussie word for spouse? We call they 'wifey' around here. It's worse when you have a wide open 'wifi' then. You'll never who'll want to connect. Next thing you know, she'll want to manage what's left of your money. Yeah, that's the ticket. Keep her in the house. That way you can have a 'house wifi' and have another one for travelling. Yeah, yeah.

Why thank you, Skot. My humour does often tend to me as dry as the outback. I find myself having to explain more than a few times to some folks in the US forums.

There was one time when we were telling jokes at a Vanagon event that I sponsor. I asked this question:

Q: "What do you call a person who only speaks one language?"

A: "American"

I was probably the least popular person there that day. ;-)

Maybe it's time to join Hartmut at the riverbank.

Yes - you need to pick your audience for certain jokes.
