Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Power Steering

Hi Bruce,
My Trakka has no power steering, but the other two have. Make hard work of tight turn and not as pleasant to drive. Had been looking at the electric power steering upgrade that hotrods use. They fit in the steering column shaft, not sure how much room it would take up but worth a look. Might save replacement of the steering rack and running power steering lines and fitting a pump. Just a thought.

Cheers,
Michael Roberts

Hi,
Has anyone on the forum got or driven a syncro without power steering? What's it like? I drove many vehicles without PS, cars & 4WD's in my younger life. Not something I'd return to willingly.

and... Has anyone on the forum converted manual to power steering?
Looks like a fairly big job looking in Bentley.

Bruce.
Adelaide.

Michael,

There is or was a power steering conversion for Type 25's in one of my old VW magazines which came as a kit.

Not sure how effective it was or how well it fitted but I assume they had thought about it somewhat.

I will have a look through a few old copies to see what I can find but it was a UK based company.

Cheers,

Skot

I have converted a manual steering 2WD T3 van to PS using all stock T3 PS parts.
Just nut and bolt work basically.
Not a big deal even.....just a fair amount of real work.

Michael,

It makes sense to use standard VW parts.  They fit without modification – made for the job, in fact.

Luke Pell is wrecking an ex-telstra syncro and they all were fitted with power steering.

May be worth asking to get the genuine parts you would need.

Have fitted a electric power steering unit to my syncro sourced from the UK .Works well and easy to fit .Under $800 delivered .You lose the collapsable part of your column as its replaced with a uni joint but i figure if its that bad a prang your in trouble any way .No pump or fluid lines or extra belt & pulley to worry about .If it fails your back to standard steering .

Hi Nic,
Perhaps a link please to the UK supplier and/or suppliers fitting instructions may be of interest to some members? TIA.

I recall back in about 2006-7 soon after I bought my Trakka, had a quote of $900 from a wrecker who claimed it was a "complete" kit. I had no idea as to the veracity of that claim, nor who or how to fit it and at what additional cost.
In the end I chose not to bother. Means one less hassle to do, one less system to fail, one less belt to squeal and gives the driver the occasional pretty useful upper torso workout at very slow speeds. The rest of the time, manual steering is just fine as is, perhaps with one exception ... negotiating off-road diagonal ruts when the steering may want to follow the rut instead.

Cheers.
Ken

the bal park cost to pay someone to do this PS conversion ..
using all good used parts ....
$ 2,000US chould cover it I'd think. Surely not over 2,500 ..that might even allow for a rebuilt steering rack to be installed.
OK, OK ...not over $ 2,995 . That's using the existing front suspension uprights or hubs .
In 2WD they are slightly different between non-PS and PS , but not enough to matter I don't think.
I would expect the same for a syncro.

My Dad paid $1200 for the whole conversion done by Mackellar Service Centre about 7 years ago. That included all the parts from a wrecked van and fitting.

Worked very well and other than the original oversized steering wheel - the fact the syncro was not originally equipped with power steering was not noticeable.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, most impressive.
The reason for my question was that I was considering The Syncro for sale by Michael Eichert in Melbourne posted early this month.
$23k & only 85,000 Kms would be very tempting to me if it only had at least PS & rear difflock. It must be one of the bare bones syncros with windows fitted.
After fitting PS, difflock, a/c & maybe a refit inside ala Trakka would make it one expensive Syncro, not to mention Subi engine & transmission upgrade, suspension, wheels & tyres etc. etc.....
Maybe a project for someone with deeper pockets than me.

Thanks all, the search continues. (Yes & there's the "synchro" on Gumtree too.)

Fellow syncro nutters,

I have now changed my radiator twice in a year costing me about a grand
in total with some more work to go with the A/C condenser and the fan &
shroud.

The Just Kampers style radiator was barely 35mm thick when it was out
and would be the reason my van started to get hot @ 100km/hr. The engine
ran cool enough at low speeds and in crawling traffic on a hot day but
the high speed was a problem.

The new Behr Radiator is in place and I just need to sort out my noisy
fan shroud.

A test drive on a 29 degree day and the only time the fan came on was
when it was sitting in the garage idling after the drive home.
Previously the fan would come on at any traffic lights.

The temp gauge was at worst in the middle and when driving it sat below
the half way not above it like before.

If anyone needs a contact of where to get them let me know. My brand new
Behr one cost $440.

Cheers,

Skot
