re: T3 LT mirrors ,, oh what a feeling!!

Gday ALL,

Just finished today fitting a pair of genuine VW LT side mirrors and
also completed a brief on and offroad performance test.

Really only need one descriptive word ...... WOW!

What I'm talking about here is comparative chalk and cheese. Having
used my stock mirrors for 3 years and now this for half a day, the
difference in all aspects is breathtaking.

These LT's make for very safe driving, both forward and in reverse. A
cursory glance now gives you all the information you need compared to
the non-friendly "hunting" around I felt I had to do within the
comparative limited scope of the old mirrors. Doesn't really matter now
whether you need to seek rearwards info in the vicinity of the sky, low
down near the wheels, out wide to cover more lanes or what was once a
blind spot. Issues such as these just no longer exist.

I really am tickled pink how much of an improvement these mirrors make
in safely and confidently reversing our beloved syncros ... anywhere!

I also like the way they tuck away (either forward or back) whenever
space is limited. This is great for narrow track offroading, avoiding
obstacles, even in my garage, the old fixed mirrors were a pain, had to
walk around or under them and they often got bumped out of position.
Not a problem anymore. Just tuck them away then click them back into
place as the need arises. Also for anyone needing a shaving mirror or
for whatever while away camping, just face the mirror out and that
mirror will tell you the honest truth, maybe a worry for some! .. haha

I went the extra bit and used anti-theft stainless steel metal thread
fixing screws top and bottom ... may well stop the impulsive
opportunist but I accept, probably not the pro thief.

Like most of us, I also was put off by the cost of these mirrors, but
having now taken the punt to buy and fit them, I'm a strong supporter
of what they offer in terms of vision, safety and convenience.

Highly recommended.

Cheers.

Hope you are not talking about LT, but about the genuine T3 look-
alikes? The LT variant isn't half as pretty :)

Gday Martin,

Pretty? I have no idea what you're talking about ok. Whatever does it
for you is fine by me.

I'm recommending what I've bought and tested on the basis of vision,
safety and convenience, is that a problem?

Cheers.

Ken

Ken,

no, i'd just like to know, what you bought :) Over here the
"expensive" variant is the genuine T3 truck-style mirror, and the
chaeap variant the LT mirrors. The difference can be seen here:

Hi Ken,

Like martin says, a lot of people call these mirrors LT mirrors. But in fact they are absolutely not the same thing.

The T3 truck mirrors were sold in Europe as original T3 parts and they are different then the mirrors Volkswagen offered for the Volkwagen LT, which in fact is a truck that was sold in Europe and which is a lot bigger then a T3.

The LT mirrors do not fit without modifications and, once mounted they will not sit nicely vertically like the T3 original truck mirrors.

The T3 mirrors were no longer available for more then a year. Recently some traders (like myself) started offering them again.

The mirrors you have I think are original T3 mirrors and have NOTHING to do with the Volkswagen LT truck lookalikes J

Mike plompen

Gday Mike and Martin,

Yes and a lot of people worldwide call a T25 a T3, but down under, heh
we manage to cope ok. Same with these mirror descriptors up till now it
seems.

So I take it from what you say, that according to the powers that be, I
drive a truck. Please forgive my foolishness, but I think really I'm
even stretching it way too far calling it an LT ... light truck. But
then, descended from convicts at Her Majesties pleasure, what would I
know? Obfuscation rules, why change it?

You people are from Europe ok ... you know the idiosyncrosies and
peculiarities of such things that beset the world that is VW. I doubt
anyone here in Australia can be blamed for starting all this word game
torture.

So on Bernd Jaeger's website, it's called a "Mirror - Big".

On your site Mike, it's called a "VW T3 truck mirror".

On Syncro-Services website, it is called a "LT mirror".

And you think I'm confused?

Could I suggest you people talk amongst yourselves next time you have a
"meet", do us all a favour and agree on a common, logical, unambiguous
descriptor? Heh then we could all just get on with our lives.

Cheers.

Ken

Ken,

I think Martin was just trying to clarify the difference. Many T3
(Vanagon in the US/T25 in UK) owner's have mistakenly purchased
the "Big Mirrors" for LT's to install in their T3's. I suspect that is
what Martin was trying to say. The angle of the arms for mirrors
intended for the T3 is different from the angle for the LT series
vans. Besides that, the lower holes are located in a different spot
for either vehicle. I happen to own both types and can clearly see the
difference. I mean I own the vehicle but not the mirrors. You
know what they say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.".

I personally prefer the look of the power mirror assemblies. They do
not flop around like the manual mirrors and fold way just like
the big mirrors. On top of that, I can move the passenger side mirror
with a switch.

Congratulations on getting your "LT-style" mirrors for your Syncro.
They do give the T3 a more utilitarian look. Want to know what
those type of mirrors are called in the US? "West Coast Style
Mirrors". That's one of the more popular names anyway.

Cheers,

Holy cow, i would never have imagined what a "problem" my post could

Exactly. I just wanted to keep some Australians from buying LT-
mirrors off ebay after reading this mailing list and really getting
LT mirrors, which they surely don't wanted. I also hate those people
over here trying to sell crappy LT stuff on ebay with the words
"perfectly fits our syncro" etc., so that's why i wanted to clarify
that matter. If you spend that big money (as you did) - it should be
the right stuff. Since "we over here in Europe" are a little
"privileged" in terms of syncro parts, my post was just trying to be
"nice" to you poor syncro owners down there on prisoner's island :P
Alright? :)

Ciao,

Martin

Hi Ken,

you are absolutely right J  If we don’t even agree here in europe what to call them then why telling you how you should call them J J

I will tell my European friends to stop making the rest of the world confused and correct the description so that you can go on with your life, lol.

So what it comes to is that there is a truck mirror specially designed for the T3, T25, Vanagon, Microbus or whatever you want to call your brick. VW calls it a T2.

So there is a lookalike mirror for a completely different vehicle, the Volkswagen LT truck, a european Volkswagen model that is very similar to some MAN trucks. The thing is these Volkswagen LT mirrors will fit with some modifications but it is not the mirror that is sold normally on the internet. David Marshal from fastforward, who recently stopped selling parts, was also selling T3 mirrors whereas on his website he called them LT mirrors.

Anyway, don’t leave your sleep over it J You will most probably have the original T3 ones anyway since they fit so nicely like you say. And please call them like you want to.  As long as no-one sells LT mirrors as T3 ones, so selling something that won’t fit perfectly, I think it doesn’t matter what they call them, I even saw people calling them Syncro mirrors.

But, briefly, you are right that they are great !

Cheers !

mike

Gday Martin,

I love my new mirrors. End of story.

Cheers.

Ken

Nomenclature.

Come on, everyone, we are doing this to death!

The important point here is that every supplier seems to have a different descriptor for the mirrors that fit the T3 body shell.  Yes, we use T3 here in Australia and yes, it creates confusion with Type 3, but it is evident that the core message to ensure that anyone contemplating buying mirrors needs to establish that they do in fact fit a T3 / T25 / Vanagon and not a totally different body.
