re: Vanagon instrument cluster .. fitting issues

Gday ALL,

Just doing some homework so I can make an informed decision whether or
not to decide on this project.

Is there anyone here in Oz who has physically done this changeover, can
remember how things went and are prepared to answer a few installation
queries I have please. Thanks.

Cheers.

Hello Ken,

complete with the circuit ribbon and plug advertised for an 86 to 91 vehicle.

I downloaded the following http://www.oldvolkshome.com/late_van_cluster_install.pdf expecting to do some rewiring, but when I checked all the wire colours which all matched and after plugging in, everything also worked except the MPH Speedo which read fast i.e.; off the clock at 80kph

Gday Ralph,

Thanks for responding ... much appreciated. Yes I already had that
oldvolkshome article and hoped our Oz clusters, being newer, wouldn't
need such gymnastics. Just a few follow q's if you don't mind please.

On the LHS, is it the case you simply parted out the Seat Belt/Brake
Warning Light module from the Vanagon cluster and installed in its place
your own existing Parking Brake/Brake Warning Light module. No other
mods required for this?

On the RHS, there is an extra switch in the Vanagon cluster ... Rear
Window Defogger switch. Did you find an alternate use for that switch?

The Vanagon digital clock needs to be connected to its own power supply
plug connector and 2 wire feed. Is it correct this particular 2
connector plug and wiring isn't in our Oz syncros, meaning you had to
procure this plug connector and then wire in a power feed? Is it a
common plug type available here?

The translucent plastic sheet protective cover that lays on top of the
cluster ... did it come with your vanagon cluster or was it missing?

The tacho worked straight off? .... no extra wiring needed?

Do you find having the tacho worth all the trouble and expense ...
buying OS and shipping costs?

Any other issues I haven't included? Thanks a lot Ralph.

Cheers.

Ken

Ken,

Yes the LHD "Fasten Belt & Brake" was swapped over for the RHD "Park Brake & Brake" module, I changed the blanking plate for the spare defogger switch (future spot lights?)
The digital clock is wired in to the printed blue circuit where it gets it's power from the red wire.
The RHD Oz Syncro plug fits straight into the LHD socket of the cluster.
The plastic cover sheeting did not come with the cluster I used the old one.

Tacho worked straight off (I did follow the green coloured tacho wire from the dash to the coil to make sure)
I've always had Tacho's on my vehicles and couldn't drive without knowing the engine revs, especially with such a quiet motor.

The only thing I haven't got working is the OXO indicator which could be the sensor or a bulb?
I didn't have to do any extra wiring as suggested by the Oldvolkshome article.
I still need to change the Speedo over.

The following is correct for both of my clusters.

Hoping this helps.

Regards,

Ralph

Gday Ralph,

Ok good stuff .... does look to be quite doable then eh.

Just a couple of points then please.

To further clarify the power supply for the digital clock then. Is there
or is there not a 1 or 2 wire power lead coming from the blue printed
circuit and the lead has a plug on its end to connect onto the clock? If
so, does this form an integral part of the cluster wiring so it should
be there in place anyway? Or if not, it must then be part of the
vanagons wiring harness, in which case I need to have supplied that same
end of lead plug to connect the clock. Sorry, still confused on that
bit.

As far as the OXO advisory light goes, I believe we don't have the
necessary device that the OXO light is connected to ... its on US
vanagons but not Oz syncros. It's to do with periodic warning for oxy
sensor replacement. Our Oz syncros are far more sophisticated than that.
We wait till they start gasping and belching etc., then we replace the
oxy sensor.

There still is a demand for US mph speedos on ebay, so when you remove
it, flog it off on ebay back to the states.

Cheers and thanks Ralph. Too bad it's a bit too hard ferrying our
syncros across the ditch to visit you guys eh.

Ken,

Yes I'm please with the result and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

The power supply for the clock is the red wire in terminal 5 of the main white plastic plug (which is numbered on the end if you take it out and look) it is not a separate plug but, as you say an integral part of the cluster wiring. Does that make sense?

Thanks for the info on the OXS light that has save me time on tracking down why it wouldn't work.

(Any one want a factory MPH Speedo with KPH marked on the inside?) Yes, I'll try e-bay.com thanks.

When you're over on that ski-ing holiday this winter with the cheap exchange rate, I'd be happy for any one to call in as I don't get as much Syncro chat as you guys do. Arne Haas the young German Visitor is calling in tomorrow to catch up.

Ralph,

Thanks for the help, I'll now consider my oppportunities to get a US
cluster. I agree there are occasions when I miss having a tacho, be it
driving or during maintenance procedures.

Skiing you say? Too old and cold for me. Summer sounds good though, a
destination we'd like to do someday. You better hire out your syncro
methinks.

Cheers.
