Rear disc brake set up?

Hi,

Anybody running a rear disc brakes?  I see Sherman Volks conversion has one, but is anyone using it?  Any how effective are they anyway.  I have heard that a lot of the set up are not a good as the stock set up well maintained.  Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Michael Roberts

Micheal, for off-roading you cant go wrong with your well maintained rear drums. If you are thinking about a 3.3 H6 engine conversion that never goes off-road go the rear discs.
Do the fronts first if you are thinking about better braking.
Start with a bigger booster.I can report that this is well worth the effort.

I would second that motion. With rear brakes doing only 10 to 20% of the braking  the only real gain you will get is a firmer brake pedal. A guy at my work just bought a new 2011 spec sr5 hilux, it has rear drums! Greg E

Thanks for the advice,

I’m actually upgrading the fronts next week with the small car set up, booster and braded line front and rear.  I guess the reason I asked the question was really less about braking efficiency and more about ease of maintenance.  I was out in the hills the other week and drove through a sandy river and up the other side which was no problems.  The issues occurred when I got up the other bank and found a tee intersection.  I managed to pick the wrong direction as it was blocked and had to roll back part way down the bank.  This is when I found my rear drums had gathered a few small stone and would not work. Then there was the lovely sound of stones on steel which is always pleasant.  Single narrow track with nowhere to pull off, eventually they worked themselves out.  I was thinking that with Solid rear disc less entrapment points for stones, mud etc.  So that is the logic behind the question on disc.  Interesting the hilux are still using the drums.

Hi Michael

I have just put a Sherman 15 inch rear disk conversion on my camper two weeks ago

With all the extra weight that goes into a camper, plus 70l of extra fuel, and 70l of water the originals were never going to pull up with modern traffic.

Sherman pointed out that the original wheels have such a deep well that effectively the brakes are only effectively ones to fit the modern 13 inch rim

Anyway they have realised all my expectations of the modern brake, still considering that it is a lot of vehicle to stop

A few considerations though

-          The other responses are other valid alternatives to improve braking

-          The Sherman kit comes with adaptor plate, disk,Subaru calliper. And a holder plate to hold the vw handbrake outer. But more needs to be purchased, this being 4 bolts to hold calliper on adaptor bracket, solid brake line that goes over trailing arm,and a bit of flex to attach to the to the calliper.

-          I felt his handbrake bracket caused too much kink in handbrake line so i welded more onto his, and also welded a holder to support the solid to the flex joiner of the brake line. At the time i did get angry that i had purchased a kit and in my opinion it wasn’t complete, and i had to modify it.

But that feeling is long gone every time i put the brakes on.

Anyway i will also say hi to all other syncro nutters, as this is my first conversation with the chat group. I have 2 syncros, one ex Telstra, and the other im the 2nd owner. It has front & back diff locks and a decoupler and has traaker setup and nearly all extras from new.

Is great that all of you have the same problems and loves that i do

Brian,

Welcome to the group and thanks for your first post.

A couple of pictures of your Sherman installation would be useful.

Two questions:

Does this conversion fit inside the standard 14” Syncro wheel or is this 15”only?

How much was the kit?

Les

Hi les

Am away from home at moment so will try to post photo when get home

Sherman has a disk that will go into a 14 inch rim but the problem is that it is the physical size of a 13 inch disk. It seems that the standard rim has a very large inward protrusion that only allows small brakes to be fitted. This means that the purchase of this small disk is not really worth the effort for the very small improvement that it would give. Thus i went for the 15 inch disk and looked for merc wheels. I was after the 15 inch wheels anyway and have put on 215/80/15 tyres in an at pattern, and the combination of the new  brakes and the wheel/ tyre combo have revolutionised the ride, so much so that wendys comment after driving was wow!!!!

The kit cost about 1000.

My next step is to re spring front and back as the camper carries some weight. Someone may know some of this that i have researched. The front springs of an xd falcon come in the same spring dia and increase in 1mm increment. Also you can order them in 1cm increments. I have ordered a set 1mm larger dia and50 mm longer than the the standard syncro. They are about 2mm wider in their diameter but that will only need a bit of modification of the top rubber holder. My son has a Nissan patrol and his front spring measures up to the same sizes as the syncro rears so they will be tried over the break. Now i know that springs are a black science so i will be the dummy that tries it and report back to you all

Brian,

We are coming up to God's waiting room to invade the out-laws and hart in our blue caravelle syncro camperize pop top in very early Jan (2nd or the 3rd from memory) if the weather behaves and is not monsoonal like the same time last year.

Ben C is planning a drop in the same day plus Hart owns half the syncros in NSW (much to Elke's disgust) - so there will be quite a few there.

Catch you there for the informal syncro get together.

Cheers,
