rear discs on a 16" syncro?

Has anyone fitted rear disc brakes to a 16" syncro? i'm having great difficulty trying to locate a pair of "as new" backing plates for mine, so my next option is to convert it to rear discs. so who has and how??
cheers jon
ps the rear backing plates on a 16 are totally different to a 14, there are 6 cap head bolts holding them on, i'm not 100% sure if they are the same or similar to the early LT 28 or 35 vans
Jon,

Try John Sherman - he has T3 syncro rear disc brake conversions and could probably sort something out for the 16 inch syncro fairly easily.

He has a website if you want to Google his name.

Cheers,

Skot

I have seen brand new 16" backing plates on ebay in an ebay shop in Germany before but haven't been looking lately, not sure if you have tried that already??

Did you try Lars in Germany? He had some before on ebay.de. I'm putting rear disc on mine but keeping the old parts just in case I change my mind later. Burley makes some inexpensive brackets which accept Audi calipers. In fact I am staring at one of his sets on my workbench right now. The downside is people complain the the parking brakes on rear discs do not hold as well on hills compared to the drum brakes.
I'm cc-ing this to the Syncro 16 List just in case someone there has any tips to share.

thanks guys, Lars is SUPPOSED to be finding some backing plates for me, (one of the many looking) but he hasn't got back to me yet. i do look on e-bay uk + usa, but i find that the germans dont like posting to Aus and theres the language barrier so i tend to stay away from that one!
i'll give my local VW dealer a shout with part numbers supplied.
thanks again.

ps am i on the "syncro 16" list?

Jon, the only guy in Aus that might have converted a 16s rears to disc is Yurik. Greg E

Jon.

Mike Plompen (http://www.busman.be/) is a good supplier and posts to Australia .  Try him.

VAG made only two RHD 16” Syncros, both for the 1990 Australian Safari.  They are both still in Australia ; the van is owned by Yurik in Perth and the double cab is owned by Mark Boys in Melbourne .

Jon,

I believe you are on the Syncro 16 List. I can't check at the moment as I am in the field without a laptop.

Had trouble with Yahoo today. Sent a reply to you earlier and got a message that Yahoo was rejecting messages from my ISP. Apparently, the messages got through eventually.

I agree that the fellows on eBay.de are not the easiest folks to deal with in English. The whole direct wire to each other's bank accounts is not only cumbersome but also expensive from the US. My bank charges me US$47 regardless if I sent $10,000 or US$1. Small ticket items are not worth wiring money for. I deal with guys like Lars in Germany and Patrik in Sweden who communicate in English and accept Paypal.

Jon,

If you were referring to the US 16” list, Ben will tell you.  As far as Australia goes, the 16” list is just two because VAG made only two in RHD.

Sometimes non-genuine articles make their way on to genuine lists.  For example, Ford made 98 GT40’s to reach homologation for Le Mans entry.  Of those 98, only 127 are known to remain.  And no, that’s not a misprint.

Les,

It must suck to send messages through your shop vac.;-)

IIRC, both Mark and Yurik are accounted for on the US 16" List and Registry. I'm pretty sure Jon is there as well. I just can't confirm at this time because I'm presently waist deep in T3 parts. It's past 2am here and I'm still sorting car parts to transport to my (new to me) 40' storage container. It's just storage. I'm not shipping them anywhere.

Cheers,

BenT

Ben,

Yes, from memory, I saw them there years ago.

I was just making the distinction between the only two RH drive Syncros and the rest of the world.

(Actually, it is reversible so I can suck or blow!)

It must be difficult to drive RHD Syncros whilst holding a phone with your left hand. I type with my right hand. How the heck do you expect me to text and send email while I drive!? It does free up the good hand for beverages and sandwiches.

In San Francisco, I believe they refer to that as being 'versatile'. I know I am burning in he'll.;-)

I thought that there were a handful of RHD 16" in the UK.
