rear wheel bearings

Hi,any one else replaced rear wheel bearings more than once during ownership of their vehicle?
I know of T3 Kombi to have 400+ and never even heard a murmur from the rear bearings.
I replaced the nsr today,I only did the both sides 2 or 3 years ago.I had a growl coming from that side, that changed pitch when braking,in and out of gear.
The inner felt a little gritty.Hard to test the outer.
Its got me thinking....
Faulty bearing?in-correct install?driving conditions?worn axle?worn bearing hub?in-correct off set????Surely there is other Kombi running around with different off-sets and their not changing rears bearings every couple of years.
Any one have any theories?
BTW the nut was tight.
BenC
Hi BenC,  changed mine at approx 300 . Now at 400 Th no complaints coming from the rear yet.
Could be a faulty one , after all humans are in charge of manufacturing. Sorry, no other explanation. Hart

Hi Ben, mine's got 475 on it & never been changed. Littlle bit of play but not noisy. Have had big tyres on for most of its life & the last 150 k with et 25 wheels. I think German quality might not be what it used to be. Eddie.

That’s presuming that the bearings are in fact German.

Skot,Sand driving, doubt it.There was no sand in the grease, grease looked brand new, still coloured. When I said gritty,I didnt mean sandy, just not as smooth as I thought it should be.
Corrugated roads is what I think wears them out if anything,it was after I drove the Port side of Plomer and Maria River Road last time that I rekon stuffed them, didnt do it last year but still did some shorter corrugated roads, but the noise only started a few weeks ago, long after I had returned.

I am going with faulty bearing or damaged whilst I installed it,fitting the outer is a little tricky although I think it was the inner that was noisy, who knows.
I am sick of working on this bloody thing on my day off, cant wait for a newer car!!

Phill, isn't that the fronts? I have used generic single lip seals on the front hubs. Never seen rear seals that differ from the oem design. Ben, there are a lot of crap bearings around. Your right in that German made usually is good. Some other countries that still make good bearings are Japan, Spain and eastern Europe. The spacer is critical. Did you have play after you torqued  the nut?

Make sure they are suppling the genuine style with the large outer opening. If they  supply generic ones with a small hole you will have to remove the tie rod from the tie rod end and will need a w/alignment. Greg E
