Rebuilt engine warranty period

I have had the sticky lifters problem after not driving for a while.  Sounds bad and freaked me out at the time but after going for a drive it resolved itself nicely.  This has happened a couple of times and while it sounds catastrophic its not. Go for a drive and it fixes itself..

I have noticed when I did the lifters in my 91 model engine in my 2wd caravelle that all the push rods had dented or worn the rocker seats - considerably.

Unless your rockers were replaced with new heads (which I doubt for a $4k full rebuild) the rocker seats will be dented and this makes for loose push rods and potentially noisy lifters.

Very much a worthwhile project.

It made my van idle perfectly after being done when it wouldn't idle till about 10 mins after starting.

It didn't fix my rattly bearing noise but it made a massive difference to its running.

My 2c worth.

Cheers,

Skot

Nick you will not bleed a lifter reving the engine cold. You need to take it for a long drive and get it hot. Starting and stopping the engine cold is about the worst thing you can do. I would not recommend you adjust the tappets unless you do want to void your warranty. Greg

Hi Everyone, thanks again for the advice. I changed oil and filter yesterday but the noise is still there so I haven't driven it yet. I think the noise is very much of the stuck lifter or tappet/ valve variety and only seems on one side. (Metallic rat-at-at sound). I think my only option is to use the Bentley to have a go at the clearances myself as I don't want to drive it anywhere just in case. We are down in Anglesea so there's nothing locally.

Regards

Nick

.

Went for a gentle 15 min drive with no change to the noise. Was all I had time for and maybe need to drive further. I am just wondering whether it is something in the valve train stuck in a 'different way'. Now I TEALLY sound incompetent! All I know for sure is that it is one side and sounds like someone whacking an anvil with a hammer!

I'd be worried more about the oil light first.

If the oil light and the noise are related you could be damaging your engine by driving it. Forget about the tappets for now.

Nick,

It’s time to ring Lloyd and get his advice.

I have heard that Automatic transmission fluid added to oil at about 20% will clean out lifters ?

Bit off topic but if I had a Syncro that was worth it I would go the Subaru 2.5 conversion.
A good WBX is now becoming a rare thing due to the cost of repair. The cost of the conversion isn't cheap but you've got many years of reliable and very enjoyable motoring ahead.

In the meantime good luck.

20 minute drive sorted it! It's amazing that 15 mins didn't and 20 was the unsticking point of pressure build up. The oil light hasnt flashed either since new oil and filter. I think it is now (fingers crossed) all good. The filter I removed was a Mahle and it was a Bosch that went on as replacement. From a quick Google, the Mahle might have been something to do with the oil pressure light at low revs.
Thanks to everyone. Now I'm going to invest in a stock of more filters and oil and do the changes extra regularly for a while.

Nick,

This parallels my experience – it will eventually pump up but the engine needs to reach full operating temperature before this will happen.  Greg might be able to throw some light on that.

Have you thought about buying VW filters?
They are easy to get and not very expensive.
While you are there you can get the correct sump plug washers.
Hi Mark,
adding ATF to the engine oil would scare me… have you tried it ? Just recently rebuilt my MV after giving me 396000km
of service. Not bad. Just checked on my old lifters for deposit or dirt but they are clean as new. i replaced them with new ones anyway.
The Mv engine will see me out and the power is heaps for me anyway, my replacement of choice would be a VW product like the V6 Golf. Whatever the engine, as  long as it is a Syncro !!!

I agree, figure why the oil light came on in the first place, that will be more terminal than a rattly lifter. Is there a faulty pressure switch, an under lying over heating issue, or a bearing issue etc. As Les said, a good time to get some advise from the rebuilder.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your response.
I get the feeling your current service supplier may be a touch too exotic for our 25 year old hacks.

Hi Ken,
unfortunately my old fleet mechanic is now enjoying well earned retirement,
but before he retired, he recommended two possibilities.

The first was:
JC Automotive
1A Campbell Pde Manly Vale
John Michael
99491176
I only went to them once because I live at Castlereagh on the western boundary of Sydney and it is a three hour round trip.

The other was and is:
Exotic Cars
2c Bourke Street,
North Parramatta
Mark Belan and his right hand Arthur
9737 0311
Mark does all my Syncro work and has the capability of working on the Bergmeister if my Porsche mechanic is incapacitated sometime.
Mark runs a very nice T3 2WD van himself, and nothing has been an insurmountable problem to him so far.

Hope this helps,
Peter

Hi Peter,From your own past/present experiences, are you able to recommend to members any known/current Sydney Region or else NSW based businesses that have a competent/proven track record with rebuilding the WBX 2.1 engine? TIY.

Another item that should be replaced if the bearings are opened up or replaced are the big end bolts.
We had the experience of a high quality rebuild, albeit more than few years ago, where they were not replaced.
She threw a rod at high but not excessive revs.

The lesson learnt, they were definitely replaced on our next two rebuilds.

Hi Nick, sorry to hear you are having problems, not what you want after a re-build. I can't help on the warranty period or what's covered.

What bearing went that caused the need for a re-build? Were all bearings replaced when it was rebuilt? (crank and cam)

Low oil pressure can come from many things. If it is happening after a long run, is the motor running hotter than normal, or is the idle speed lower than normal? Both have an effect on oil pressure, and good things to check before looking further (also check oil level).

Yes it's a tough call to run the motor if there are potential issues internally, best to talk to the mechanic before doing anything so you don't void any potential warranty you might have.

Hi Hartmut, Peter and all,
Seems to me when it comes to 2.1 WBX engine rebuilders in Australia, there's a dearth of remaining competent talent. What's mostly left for Oz owners seeking such a rebuild risks a pig in a poke.

But not in the US of A.

For example, what's available there is beyond comprehension to an Australian syncro owner who's first preference is to not bastardise their van ....

Check out the 2.2 WBX rebuild specs. Ignoring for now the question of all up cost, is this or is this not just so unbelievably a fantastic rebuild by someone who has seen a need and developed an expert niche market. Or am I missing something here?

I'd be interested in members thoughts on this rebuild product ...... perhaps for us downunder ... just too far out of reach?

Cheers.

Les ,Ken and group, I have dealt with Chris Corkins (Vanistan) in the past . I bought two of his oil coolers and a few other spares that he agreed to inspect and ship to me from other US vendors. He doesn't usually do this and might not do it ever again going on how busy he's become. His oil coolers were all quality and he is a true professional and a gentleman. I believe his engines would be a quality product also, but also believe we have great engine builders in this country, just that they don't advertise so it is up to us to fish them out. My Steve Muller built engine is going as strong 90,000km along as the day I installed it. Eddie.

Eddie,

This is very useful information on Chris Corkins and Steve Muller.  This is what this group is all about.

Can you remember the specifics of the rebuild?

Hello to all.

Regarding the rebuilding of WBX's, there is a rock solid, high quality specialist tucked away in Kirrawee in Sydney's southern shire. His name is Gary Williams. Mark Hammond of Brookvale (for those that know of Marks reputation) who was my mechanic for years before he retired, held him in the highest regard. I have had both a Type4 air-cooled and a 2.1 MV rebuilt by him and not one issue. He is friendly, fastidous, and a complete gentleman. I hope this will be of help to someone. His website is linked below.

Hi Hart,

no haven't tried ATF either..
I'm still a fan of the WBX don't get me wrong. I'm still running one at 325,000 km with good compression and very reliable.
How much was the rebuild for yours ?

Mark
Les, and group, my engine has the hi compression DJ pistons with Grant rings, an aftermarket camshaft which was chosen by Steve Muller for better low to mid performance (can't remember which one). It has a bigger oil pump, CB performance rocker assemblies with the elephant foot adjusters and also the reman con rods with the rod bolt mod from Van Café. Add to this the Vanistan oil cooler and these mods have made this engine reliable with great torque. It has performed better for power, reliability and gone further than any of my previous rebuilds . One other engine buidler comes to mind  is Nick from Volksparts in the ACT. I owned a 2wd t3 that had his rebuilt engine in it and it was a very smooth & reliable engine that is still going well, now that a mate of mine owns it. Eddie.
