replacing heater hose

Hi All, I'm about to replace my heater tap (again).  Thought it would be good to replace the heater hoses at the same time as one of the last hoses in the van that hasn't been replaced.  Can anyone tell me exactly the size and length of hose I will need for this?  My ex-telstra only has the heater up the front.

Many thanks, Sam

There is quite a bit in the files sections including a few posts and a sheet showing individual hose details

See here

Yahoo! Groups

A few vendors also do hose kits the have some details:

(look around, there more info in there)

As an aside, the heater hoses to the front are the same for all, if a van has the rear heater it just breaks into the two hoses running to the front.

Hope this helps a little!

Richard

Hi Sam

The two hoses that connect to the heater are hard to find, but if you hunt around you can still find them.

I purchased mine from VWheritage about six months ago, but they might also be available from GoWesty, BusBoys or VanCafe.

just google the part numbers - feed pipe 251 265 053C, return 251 265 054A

Cheers, Roger.

Thanks Roger, those weren't the hoses I was thinking of and another to add to the list ! Does the dash or anything need to come out to get to those? I was thinking more of the what I believe is just 5/8 heater hose that runs the length of the van, twice. Wondering what length of this to get. Might leave those heater pipes for next time, one day when the dash comes out, fingers crossed till then. Thanks, Sam
Hi All Again,

A question and note.  First question can someone confirm for me replacing the long coolant pipes with the two-piece stainless steel version, does the van need to be on a hoist to do this job?  Is it possible just up on jackstands, although frustrating?  Tried the other day but the pipe got jammed trying to pull it out, I was running out of daylight so just put it back in place.

Then to note it does appear those two pipes Roger disappear past a rubber grommet to get to the heater so I'm not game to have at them at this point.  Might do the long 5/8 pipes but yes will need to track down some good pipe at the right price, as I might get about 8m of it to have some spare.  Silly supercheap auto said they had it in stock on their computer and wasn't there when I made it to the store.

Thanks all, Sam
Sam, if you wiggle them and turn them and use some force plus some swearing they might give up. Cutting one in half helps too. Mine I pulled out with help by John Deere..

Thanks Aaron and Hart.  I got one done last night, though in a rush to get ready for a work trip so didn't do the second one.  Cutting in half with a ryobi 'multi tool' made it so much easier.  Unfortunately Mr Deere doesn't live nearby.  Not sure if I've got it lined up perfectly as I couldn't get the little spring holder back in place, and used quick ties there instead.  When I get to do the second one hopefully I will be able to get the both lining up better, but fixed the dodgiest pipe at least now so hopefully less chance of road side breakdown this trip.

Hi Sam,

I need to do the same thing.  Where did you get the stainless pipes from?

Thanks,

Neil.

Got them from Just Kampers AU, was able to convince them to give them to me for $550 (listing price $660!, $460 or something is the 2wd pipes), may or may not have been cheaper to get from gowesty once you consider shipping / currency conversion.  Had someone tell me to make sure you get RHD not LHD ones, but I can't see how there would be a difference?

For the record I had the gowesty temporary fix kit in place.  The temporary fix worked for about 8 years until I finally had one let go on the highway.  Good thing I had the heater on my bare feet and wondered why all of a sudden the heater went cold...

Thanks for all that info.  I saw them at JK and thought that was a lot of money for a couple of SS pipes so put it off.
At least you got a better deal and that was a good run out of the Go Westy kit!

Hi All,

Just a few other notes in case anyone interested.  Looks like gowesty currently has the stainless pipes on special, Stainless Steel Coolant Pipe Set - 4WD | GoWesty

$310 US

Secondly, of interest to get a 'heater hose' kit from van-cafe, however has stuff for a rear heater that many of us wouldn't need, they have the following note on their webpage...

Van Cafe: Vanagon Parts - Heater Hose Kit | Hoses

NOTE - Just to be clear, this kit does not include the hoses that go into the front dash and require removal of the dash. Those hoses are preformed hoses with required bends and as they are protected from the elements we have never seen these fail. This kit includes enough hose to go up to the unions where those preformed hoses begin

So are they really different between LHD and RHD? (or anyone used the pipes from gowesty or van café?)

Looks like with shipping and exchange the price is not that different from JK.

thanks for all the info!

Hi Richard and others, regarding the s.steel 4WD pipes. I got mine a 4 months ago from The Bus Depot in the USA. I didn't think about LHD vs RHD, but my mechanic put them in ok.
At the time Just Kampers didn't have them, Bus Depot had them at the door in 5 days. I remember at the time the cost was similar.
There is no such thing as LHD/RHD pipes.
All Syncro's have one type of coolant pipe only, suitable for the DG/MV/DJ/SP/SR/SS and JX (Diesel) engines with part numbers

251 121 397L for the feed pipe
and
251 121 399L for the return pipe

The 2WD versions for the above carry the same number but with the letter 'M' rather than 'L'.

The source of truth for this is ETKA (you can google it)

Cheers

Hans

Hi Sam,

Great to catch up with you at the Sydney Nats. Worked out a weekend tagalong/campout yet?

Sure hope you haven't jinxed my "GoWesty temporary fix kit" repaired coolant pipes!! HA!

Reckon I fitted the same repair kit around the same or longer time-span as yours and mine have caused me no grief at all since ... I do check for leaks on all four joins every so often but nah ... all have remained dry as. Gotta say in my opinion those original coolant pipes are extremely durable ... certainly not "plastic" ... they are a nylon type material. Fit for purpose to be sure ... shame about the ends, that's all.

So naturally I'm curious to learn, did you eyeball the join that finally leaked after 8 long years!? ... what did you find was the issue and could it have been remediated without too much effort instead, given the very expensive S/S alternative?

Cheers.

Ken

Hey Ken,

I will upload a photo of my failed pipe.  You can see the end which failed had the metal piece almost completely worked out of the pipe.  Yes if it wasn't for these rusting end pieces these pipes are a very solid material.  So I think the gowesty temporary fix kit... hmmm maybe because i had undone these once or twice over the years to flush coolant using a garden hose, maybe corrugated dirt roads over time, maybe the rubber pipe that was clamped onto it getting old... anyway there was no leaks at all, until yes on the highway it just left go all of a sudden.  Perhaps if you remove the rusting metal piece altogether, and then make sure your pipes are very well supported so there is no down force on the joins during bumpy roads then this would be a permanent fix?  Or of course the expensive stainless steel pipes option.

A weekend camp sounds great Ken, but my van is about to go to paint this weekend (yay!) and I've just had a steering issue crop up... which I will put a question in another post.  So maybe something in 2-3 months time, not too far from Sydney?

Hope you are well, Sam
