Replacing pressurised coolant reservoir

Hullo from the West

A leak in the  reservoir at the pressure switch has returned after a repair with some sealant a couple of years ago. I think that a new tank, cap and pressure switch is probably the best permanent fix so I have been looking at the items offered by Van Café.
Has anyone had any experience on the quality of these items or know of other suppliers? Any advice would be appreciated.

I’ve bought both the cap and bottle from Just Campers. The cap was faulty, resulting in a blown head gasket on a perfectly good engine. The bottle leaks where the switch screws in. My advice is spend a little more and get the genuine article… I bought a genuine cap from Mick Motors and sealed the bottle which now has a leak on one of the seams……All this was done in March this year.

Michael,

A member recently bought one from Volks Home, Thomastown , Victoria .  This is run by John Goodison, who has been a VW man forever; he is also the Technical Officer for the VW Club of Victoria .  John is well known for stocking only parts of acceptable quality; he simply won’t touch inferior stuff for the very reasons that you have experienced.  If I am looking for an OEM part, John is always my first contact.

Hi Michael,

As Les said I just went through this after suffering from a cracked tank. John Goodison spoke to me at length about how anything other than OEM is inferior. He found me the genuine article from Tasmania and Express posted it next day. It was about double JK prices but for peace of mind, worth it in my eyes. It came with a genuine cap included in the price.

I did have issues with the Febi branded level sensor that I got at the same time as the tank. It wouldn't seal properly. Fixed this today by re-using the original sensor.

To pressure test the system I made up a device that uses the old cap with the pressure valve removed and a few parts from the plumbing shop. A schrader adapter is fitted to one end so that it can be pressurised with a bicycle pump. Worked well and saved having to start the engine. Stole the idea from a Samba forum thread.

Cheers.

Jon.
