Weather no good on the weekend thought i would set to and fix the annoying oil leak from the flywheel seal.(7 days from the USA and the correct one amazing) when i dropped the gearbox out. I found the bell housing thick with a oil sand mixture.
Left over from a trip to sandy cape west coast of tassie with lots of light fluffy sand driving, not long after that the oil drip started.
Ive decided to replace spigot bearing, clutch thrust bearing and gearbox oil seal as well. had the starter motor checked out for sand.
Which gets me to a point has any one else suffered this? I Iknow the sand must have been scooped up by the drain hole/scoop at the bottom. so Iam going to sika a drain hose into it running towards the back some where.
Cheers Phil

Phil,
I have done a fair bit of sand driving in some very soft
powdery stuff and not had this happen. However, I have a Suby engine and there
is an adapter plate covering this area so no sand ingress.
With regard to your change of drain direction, be careful how
you do it as I found when I go stuck - I always manage to reverse out. If you
drain is pointed towards the back of the car, in reverse, you may also get this
problem.
Just a thought.
Hope yours is all fixed shortly.
Cheers,
Scott

Phil,
Like to add to this topic.
When I did my gearbox it was the first time out
the bell housing was sealed right around the
housing with sealant as is the starter motor attaching face.
There is a notch
in the 6 o'clock position of the bell housing and the
engine side which has a plug (flat about 25mm long) I
also believe sealant would do the job as well if this
plug is lost. Considering this there is a very important
rubber breather plug approx 15mm dia in the rear of the
engine case face at the 11 o'clock position (looking fron the rear)
which has a breather hose from the centre going up to the
top of the fire wall where it meets two other breather pipes one from the front diff another from the front of the gearbox near the front power take off flange, therefore the whole bell housing
is sealed as such. If you have gaps and no breather
I think you are asking for trouble going into sand/water.
Hope this helps
regards
Rick.
