A friend has just contacted me about an email she received. It purports
to come from a man in the US with whom she corresponds regularly and is
addressed to her by full name and shows his correct email address in the
From line. This is the fourth person who has contacted me in the last
four months with the the same story.
The email states that he is in London, has been robbed of all his money
and cards, and is stranded in a hotel and needs money to get home. It
asks that she send him 1000 British Pounds.
This is an established scam and has been going around for half a year or
more.
It is based on stolen address books and the scammers use the email
address of the owner of the address book in the From line, which makes
it look authentic. Each email is individually written but goes to every
address in the stolen address book.
It is a well engineered scam so beware. If you get one and it purports
to come from a
friend of yours, just ring them.
