selectable 4wd

Phill,

OK, I have found it.  Yes, it is in the 094 gearbox manual, Publication 000.5381.81.20, a copy of which you sent to me.

I think that Ben is talking about the genuine VAG manual. Didn't I photocopy that one for you Les?

Les,
I have posted your copy yesterday. I have included some spare covers so you can copy the CD for the locals. There is an extra CD for you with a .pub file of the covers for use with Microsoft Publisher. If you do not have publisher, you can download a trial version for 60 days.

There is all of the information on the decoupler that you will ever need (including wiring diagrams) and it is all genuine VAG factory publications, except the silver covered one which is VW of America.

Thanks Les. Let me know what you have.

I am after wiring diagrams as I do not have the complete set after about '87.

Phill
are you guys calling 'having a de-coupler' Selectable 4WD ?
You could call it that of course.

regarding  wiring - I can't say about your syncro vans down there, but in North American models......the wiring for the de-coupler indicator switch is already right there in the wiring harness. You kind of have to dig it out .........but it's there, already installed from the factory.

hope this is of some help.

Les,the page number in the VAG T25 manual is page 10 of the gearbox section, tittled Gearbox layout. There is a diagram(similar to the switch panel in my dash, but more specific).
Designation #6 is the decoupler,named the 4wd shift element,with a subtitle,Only on vehicles with selectable 4wd.
Page 12 instructs you on proper towng procederes and performance testing on both permant and selectable 4wd vehicles.
Page 27 also has the title, controls, housing and describes seleactable 4wd,but I cannot find the diagram. This is as far as I have read.I hope this doesnt confuse the issue anymore.

Scott,

You have come in at the end of a very long stream of posts on this subject.  This started from me looking for VAG documentation on what they called “Engageable/Disengageable 4WD” in VAG Publication 500.2808.81.20, dated January 1985.

We now know conclusively that VAG offered a decoupler/solid shaft option from the outset and it had its own VAG option code.  It appears in a number of their workshop manuals, for example VAG Publication 000.5381.5381.81.20, the workshop manual for the 094 gearbox.

We haven’t yet found any evidence that the prospective buyers got to hear about it via the public domain, like sales brochures, but it most certainly did exist throughout the life of the model.

And yes, the wiring was common to all Syncros, including the RH drive.

My search actually started a bit before the 500.2808.81. 20 publication.  For as long as I have been involved with Syncros, I have encountered references to an “early” version of the Syncro that had engageable 4WD, operated by a Bowden cable but could never pin it down to any specific VAG source and there was a lot of conflicting information around.

After a lot of digging, we finally found references in official VAG publications, the earliest reference so far being the January 85 publication, which is around the time of the introduction of the Syncro.  Finding that it was a VAG option from introduction has come as a surprise to many of us, including me.  (There was a confusing factor earlier in the search and that was the Swedish tax-dodge PTO option.)

VAG used two descriptors that I have found so far:

  • Selectable 4WD
  • Engageable/disengageable 4WD

(We aren’t guilty of making up the name.)

VW shows in ETKA/ETOS a picture of engageable 4wd, that is, on the pictures they say that it is engageable 4wd. But the picture/drawing is wrong. On the drawing you see the cable operated PTO, as sold only in FINLAND for tax reasons.

In the very beginning VW offered engeagable 4wd as an option, in one of the promotional vw video’s they talk about it and in some vw orginal manuals they also mention it.

As far as I know they only offered this in combination with a solid shaft. They must have sold a couple of cars with them.

I think they stopped producing them very soon since customers all opted for the superior system with full time 4wd.

We’ll ask the vw guys the why and when’s about the decoupler when they attend the syncro25years meeting next year near Hannover in Germany .

Mike

Scott Daniel, selectable 4wd is how the VAG manual descibes the decoupler.

That's what Volkswagen call it in their publications,

That is correct.

I think that they were available but they were not offered, and not really wanted by customers.
