Self introduction

Hi everyone,
This post just to introduce myself. I have just joined your group, my name is Ian. I don't have a Syncro but have harboured a long term desire to do so. Now that I am semi-retired I would like to make it happen. I can see already that the group & it's history will be a most necessary resource. I currently have a T3 1990 Van(lined by a previous owner) with a rear bench seat conversion (so folds down to bed) also a LWB Delica. A Syncro would potentially replace both. I just missed a Telstra van on CarPoint which (still listed) is pretty much where I would like to start. i.e. restore van then fit-out step by step. Anyway that's my story (of a small part of it) and so on with the dream!
Ian,

You have made the right choice, I used to have a Mits L300 4wd van a long while back because I couldn't afford a syncro - they were still fetching $30-$40K when I was looking first time. Before that I had a 2wd 73 kombi tin top and my dad had already bought a syncro.

I wanted a syncro really bad as the Mitso was a piece of crap.

Anyway, it seems like a natural progression of yours (as was mine) into a VW kombi syncro.

The ex-telstra van I saw on car point looked like areal mess that had never been looked after - which is a real concern for a high mileage vehicle. If they are serviced they run well for many kms.

Dont rush in and try out at least 2 vans before buying. Also look at what van suits your needs.

Hope the right vehicle finds you.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Ian,

another ex-Telstra van has appeared on Carsales:

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/volkswagen-transporter-1990-14200203?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=4&eapi=2&__N=1246%201252%201247%201282%204294962746%201216&num=15&silo=Stock&Range=Year%3a1980%2c1992&sort=default

Looks a bit better than the last one.

Paul.

Paul,

I would at least go and have a look/ test drive the Sydney one - seeing you are in Sydney - maybe not to buy but at least get a benchmark of the $$ for what you get. Both have gas conversions so see where they have installed the tank and how much space this takes up.

Many Telstra workers did not treat their vans very well - so look closely for damage to panels.

I wouldnt expect miracles from the A/C in these things either - the Prestige system is not very reliable from what I have seen and the mounting brackets can cause a lot of damage to the engine case.

Hi Scott,

It has been reported here dissatisfaction with the Prestige AC mounting bracket. Agreed there are some versions of it that are more crude than others. Agreed they are more heavy than veedubs own alloy bracket. There are those who have suffered from damage to the engine case bosses that the AC brackets are mounted to.

For some reason, I know not why, my Prestige bracket is just fine, albeit heavy, and I have no sign at all of an impending failure of the the engine case boss fastenings. Its only been mounted there for say 20 years. Not long enough? Just lucky? No idea.

Cheers.

Hi Ken,
it is good to read that the Prestige mounting fulfils it's intended purpose and with a name like prestige it really should. However, there is more to it .
Some people are looking beyond what's working or not, it's aesthetics and the eye for engineering excellence, what's important to them. And with
this in mind , I looked for the alternative and found an original VW bracket which I installed. Works beautifully, easy to adjust the drive belt. Happy.
