Reason for selling? Going upmarket with a Traveltrucks Scrubmaster on an Iveco Daily 4x4. http://www.traveltrucks.com.au/expedition-camper

A bit sad as I love the van. But Anne & I are looking for more creature comforts eg. toilet, shower, diesel heating. Plus massive offroad ability of the Iveco, with 3.0L turbo diesel, 6 speed plus triple low range and 37" wheels!

Best equipped Trakka I've heard of in Aus. Wish I had the $$
Good luck with the sale.

Hi all,
I’m having trouble with an over rich engine.
We are slowly moving through the process of finding the problem.

Latest to look at: Fuel Injection system control unit.
1. Is the Syncro unit the same as the two wheel drive unit ?
We have a spare 2WD unit which we are as yet to try.

2. If they are different, does anyone have a spare,
        in working order,
Syncro unit to lend for testing purposes or to sell ?

Hi Peter,

Correct ecu for Oz syncro is Bosch # 025 906 022 D.

Check the label on your 2WD ecu for same brand & part #.

Peter,  had these symtoms twice , once in about 1995 and once recently.
In both cases the engine was blowing black smoke a nd hardly running.
Replacing sensor #2 (below thermostat) fixed this problem.
Tought to mention this to you . Also worthwile to checkthe coil.

Cheers Paul Dumais
Aerospace Engineer

The test for the sensor should be fairly straight forward measuring resistance at various temperatures.

It's also worth checking the values back at the ECU so you are confirming the sensor AND the wires.

On my recent trip, I noticed it did not start instantly a couple of times, and was blowing a bit of black smoke. I cleaned the connector and problem went away.

That's assuming your issue is the temp sensor of course!

Richard

Thanks Ken,
much appreciated.

Hi all,
I’m having trouble with an over rich engine.

Follow through on the rich running and black smoke.

This was what we did:
1. Mechanic cleaned up terminals and contacts.

2. I progressively replaced:
. 1. Idle stabilizer control unit.
Swapped with one from donor 2WD because replacement looked better (cleaner treminals).
. 2. Oxygen sensor swapped but no change so put back.
No improvement at this stage:
Mechanic replaced:
. 3. Temperature sender, he managed to find a new one, and fitted it.
Real improvement in cool running conditions, but symptoms came back after ten minutes in a traffic jam.
Mechanic replaced:
. 4. Thermostat.
During all the testing I had seen some totally unexpected temperature guage readings, for the conditions.

Result: cured, my beautiful, blue printed, gass flowed, balanced engine runs sweetly like a new one again.

Hope this helps.

Peter, had these symtoms twice , once in about 1995 and once recently.
In both cases the engine was blowing black smoke a nd hardly running.
Replacing sensor #2 (below thermostat) fixed this problem.
Tought to mention this to you . Also worthwile to checkthe coil.

Good news Peter,

Just FYI this sensor is best known as the "Temp2 sensor", to differentiate it from the myriad of other sensors in the system. For example:

It plays quite a pivotal role in WBX2.1 engine functionality and often the goto part to replace first in the event of an issue.

Reason for selling? Going upmarket with a Traveltrucks Scrubmaster on an Iveco Daily 4x4. http://www.traveltrucks.com.au/expedition-camper

A bit sad as I love the van. But Anne I are looking for more creature comforts eg. toilet, shower, diesel heating. Plus massive offroad ability of the Iveco, with 3.0L turbo diesel, 6 speed plus triple low range and 37" wheels!

Well, there you go! Some time's it's the little things.

So did the dash temp gauge take ages to get up to temperature, and seem to vary while driving?

Hopefully you would see the dash gauge acting differently now, coming up to temperature quicker and being more stable.

At least your cooling system must be working to keep the coolant temp too low :)

Glad you sound it.

Richard

Yes Ken,
The Temp2 sensor is an interesting device, and apparently the one in the Syncro is different to the one in the 2WDs,
so I could not just grab the one from my donor car.
I felt lucky when my mechanic sourced a new one from a Bosch distributor.
Guess it is a common component for other engines.

Yes Scott,
While we were puzzling our way through this experience,
I rang my old VW T3 fleet mechanic, Mark Hammond, some of you may remember him,
Mark has long retired to Queensland, but unfortunately is having some health problems.

When he was working, Mark almost always had one or more of my T3s in his workshop at a time.
Each one was serviced at 7000 Km intervals.
To solve this sort of problem, he told me that he used to drive them home at night,
changing a possible problem source at a time till the problem was solved.

In this case, it was a real puzzle, until I connected with inappropriate temperature readings on the gauge.

I found pages 24.28 & 9 of Bentley very helpful, because it made what Mark was saying meaningful,
even though the thermostat was the key cause.

Excellent work Peter.

Lots of trial and error in these old engines.

Always great to hear what cures an engine's problems

Cheers,

Skot

Peter

Peter, had these symtoms twice , once in about 1995 and once recently.
In both cases the engine was blowing black smoke a nd hardly running.
Replacing sensor #2 (below thermostat) fixed this problem.
Tought to mention this to you . Also worthwile to checkthe coil.

Hi all,
I’m having trouble with an over rich engine.

Bruce,
I cant figure out how to PM you on this yahoo thing......Is there an email or number I can contact you on?
Mark
Hi Bruce

Can you email me off-line ?

Hi all,

I'm far from an expert with Yahoo. Only ever joined to get in this group. There are a number of ways to use it, and seems everyone is using it differently.

You can use an existing email program that pulls emails from Yahoo so you can view your yahoo emails there. I've not used it like this, but would not think it's that hard to do.

If you log into Yahoo (see first image attached) you can see the conversations that are in the Syncro group, reply to them, start new ones etc.

I have highlighted where you can click on mail. This takes you to an area you can use as a regular email program, email people directly and receive emails from others. These emails are not visible to the rest of the group members (well not that I'm aware of)

I have put a second image up of what this screen looks like.

I'm sure there's other ways to use the site and customising you can do etc, but I have not explored this.

Hope this might help others.

Richard

I'm having no success with yahoo at all.
Trying to get in touch with Bruce Morphett.

Bruce,
Very interested. Please call me on 0427127128
Thanks
