Roger
I got the January issue of 4X4 Australia out of the
library yesterday. Thought this photo may be of interest as it
certainly looks like Shallow Crossing. The Syncro did better than
this bloke.

Bruce
I heard that he was using his camera while driving.

How Sweet that shot is. On Rogers shallow crossing the Nissan and Landy on the opposite bank weren't game enough to trust in their $x$ macho machines until those intrepid adventures Paul and Roger showd em' how it's done. Priceless; as the old maxim goes a picture's worth a thousand words.

Dear Bruce and Michael,
Bruce that was a remarkable bit of observation. I agree it looks like the same crossing and I can identify with the feelings the Toyota  driver experienced when he realised the causeway was no longer his way and that he couldn't get all wheels back on it.He was going the other way which put the driver's side actually in the river although it wasn't flowing as high as for us. I reckon the Syncro IRS and automatic bringing in of 4WD helped me through as I didn't have the presence of mind (or need) to lock the diff. I think I was also in "G" gear so had plenty of torque and didn't lose momentum changing to low ratio or getting out to lock in the hubs despite what Michael's picture suggested.
Michael I have to correct your statement -it was only Paul and perhaps the Syncro that showed 'em how its done.
I now have the first 2 lines for my forthcoming "Ask the silly buggers" series on outback travel
1. Don't take photographs when driving across a causeway.
2. Don't drive across causeways at 2am

Probably 3 will be don't get out in the middle of a Northern River to lock in the hubs of a non-syncro if you see 2 eyes and a snout gliding towards you.

Will have to try to get the January edition of 4 x 4 Australia magazine. Their award to the Syncro back in the 80's was one of the factors that encouraged me on our hallowed quest.

Cheers
Roger

I reckoned I would have been stuck in that situation because I don't have a diff lock so it is interesting that you didn't pull the knob.

I think it was Overlander that gave the award, not 4X4 Australia. 4X4 don't do soft-roaders now (without a transfer case) so the Syncro wouldn't get a look in these days... More fool them.

Then lets just leave it at that, may they all remain in the dark. BTW Roger, I concur it has to bee in the same place as your little mis-adventure except in the opposite direction. Quite syncronistic don't you think?
