Smallcar Vanagon 11" dual piston front disc brake upgrade-Syncro

Hi all,

I know this has probably already been done to death but is anyone running the Smallcar.com Vanagon 11" dual piston front disc brake upgrade kit. Just want to know if it made an improvement.  Or is there a better set up I should be looking at.  Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Micheal, there are a few options for upgading front brakes.Smallcar looks good,(but american....dollars good though),you could install Audi twin-spot calipers with some machining involved(very good converson) or South African big brakes(single piston I think??),all require 15 inch plus wheels. They all should make great improvement to the borderline brakes we all have.
I know that one way to increase your standard brakes is to fit a bigger brake booster(to gain maximum effieciency from all the above, this is the first thing that should be done).         go to www.syncro.ca/tech/audibrakes.htm
I am fitting an BMW e30 series bigger booster on my next day off,I will let you all know how it goes.I like the Audi conversion.Dont know about the colour though.
I hope that worked,I am shit on computers .

Thanks for the info Ben,
Would be interested in hearing how the booster swap goes? I have a leaking clutch master at the moment and need to do some work in that area anyway.

Cheers,

Hi Michael,

I've been running this setup for a few years now. Basically Audi vented discs. You won't notice a huge difference in brake feel due to the standard brake booster. You will notice that there is no fade, and the harder you push the quicker you stop.
If you have bigger wheels and a heavy van I reckon they're essential.
I once did a long downhill run on the original discs and ended up with no brakes. Doesn't happen any more.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the info, It is the brake fade I would like to get rid of on long down hill section when towing the car trailer. Sounds like this might be the solution.

Cheers,

Michael Roberts
