some help would be good....

hi there - could i ask for some help:
we have our eye on a VW type 3 syncro 1992 camper
it is manual, 4x4 and has 293 000 km on the metre.......
the current owners said that the motor was totally re-conditioned in 1998 and has new brakes, a re-furbished cooling system and new tyres......
I have to say i am not that knowledgable on car or vans or mechanics.....it jsut seems like a good strong van for doing trips here in Australia - i need a run around town vehicle and i also want something i can go away in at the weekends or on a longer trip.....

The van we have our eye on is LPG and petrol which is quite unusual i think - could be good for saving money on fuel.....

If you have any advice about what to look out for/ask when we go pick it up/check for etc etc it would be very much appreciated.......
thanks so much
christina

Brand new member as of about six minutes ago!!  Any help from the group will be appreciated particularly given Christina’s zero knowledge of the T3 Syncro extant.

My advice would be if it seems pretty right,
and drives really well, and the seller seems like a decent sort ..
have it checked out professionally by a Synro-Knowledgeable mechanic ..
or even a member here would help you check it out possibly.

they can be ididiosyncratic and demanding to own and maintain, let's say.
Awesome vehicle for sure ..
'tempermenatal' is too strong a word ..but they require an understanding owner let's say.

Not on that continent or I'd offer to inspect if professional for you. ( Oregon, USA )

This would have eliminated Francesca Coles, who is not only one of our staunchest members but also a moderator of Syncro_T3_Australia.

Thanks, Les. Even an owner with the skills to maintain one would probably concur that owning a Syncro is not for the fainthearted with difficulty sourcing parts etc. Still, if you like a challenge it's a grand (but pricey) hobby, replete with an eclectic and interesting bunch of helpful co-enthusiasts. Being an optimist probably helps, as does doing your homework before the big purchase.

Christina,

One of the core reasons that I set up Syncro_T3_Australia (now eight and a half years ago) was to establish a technical advice and support resource for Syncro owners in Australia.  It appears to work well but other members will offer a more unbiased opinion!

Yeah well said Francesca, probably more along the words I was trying to say.

What I meant was that unless you are passionately tied with Volkswagen and or syncro, there is better options,I think, to get you around Australia.

I do fully maintain my vehicle as do I drive it every day, when it goes off-road,I dont just drive on unsealed roads.

I do service EVERYTHING that is required from one year to another, and this takes up alot of my days off.And I am lucky enough to have a hoist...and good access to tools and spare parts. And I am the second owner of my bus.
These old vehicles are just that!
A lot had a bad start in life, but many may of found some TLC later. If you can find a one or two owner, good stuff.

Still no matter how good or well looked after your potential purchase is,it is still 25 years old, outdated technology, worn parts, you need to keep up with the maintenance, otherwise your investment will diminish in value fast and be worth half the value.Thats why there is many being wrecked.
You will defiantly need to spend thousands of dollars whilst you own a syncro,to keep it on the road. Most here have.
But I love syncro.

Christina,
I don't know your Syncro and unfortunately I don't need it,
but at the price shown I don't think you are doing it or yourself justice.

Surely it is worth more.

What does everybody else think ?
