spare tyre

Hello, I have just measured my spare and discovered it is 7mm higher than the 4 tyres on the vehicle. (The wear occurred quicker than I expected)

I dont have a decoupler fitted and wondering if I should replace all the tyres with new ones or is 7mm or 3.5mm on the ground going to make any difference if I have to use it for 300Ks if I have a puncture and have to use it until I can have it repaied.

Greg,

Included on the DVD that I sent to you is a method of accurately measuring the loaded radius of your tyres.

An essential part of the measuring process is that the tyres must be measured on the vehicle and that they be inflated to the placard pressure for the end of the vehicle to which they are fitted.

The key measurement is the Static Loaded Radius – referred to as SLR – and it is this measurement that you use to compare your tyres.

Owning to the manner in which the VC operates, it is preferable to keep the difference to under 2% maximum.

Going back to your question, the best condition is to start with four new tyres and regularly rotate them to keep the wear even.  After you fit a decoupler, you can run a dissimilar size if you get a puncture and have to use the spare to get home.

Greg. If you have to use the unmatched spare, remove the tailshaft. A bit fiddly but will get you out of trouble. Bill.
