Phill,

I followed the link to the home site of this wheel carrier and it has a very impressive range.

I suggest that everyone has a look:

A number of people have enquired about wheel carriers over the years and this one looks to be very well designed, particularly in the way that the load is distributed to the door aperture.

Also Gary is a breeze to deal with. He makes them specially to take the Euro size plates if asked for at no extra charge. I had the carrier made and delivered in less than two weeks. The only problem is the postage costs which was about $380 (UPS Air and insured.)
I got a price from Gary a month ago.
AU$1240 delivered.
It looks like a great product but is expensive for us.

Having said that the prices for wheel carriers for modern 4x4's at the large after market off
road shops in Aus can be that much and some!
Are these in Australia? Seems like most are listed in US Dollars
surely it can be made here in Aus for less? Crikey i may as well bolt
one to the bull bar for that much money. Its only a spare wheel
carrier, or is it much more?

My thought exactly i mean it is nothing special sure there is some
heavy duty adaption plates and bends, cuts etc. but really it is only
going to carry a spare wheel yeh. I would be looking to obtain a tail
gate ladder (rooftopbasket) + spare wheel carrier, i think it may be
time to talk to some mates....

Hi Folks,
I've mentioned before my syncro came with considerable extra documentation.  This included a photocopy of a diagram of the genuine rear wheel carrier components available from VW at the time.(The 16" model?) My original owner bought the genuine hinges and had a 2 wheel carrier fabricated locally (W.A.) . I've copied this and some photos to illustrate how it ended up in practice on my vehicle to a new photo album called "T3 Rear Wheel carriers". If I was fabricating it today I would try to put an extra hinge in the middle as the double carrier needs a greater distance behind than I can always guarantee in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. It did however incorporate a stay open lock which is important as it could lead to much sadness if it swung closed just as the rear tailgate was being slammed shut. The orginal owner told me the hinges were expensive and he thought they may no longer be available from VW.Germany.  Remember also that 2 x 16" wheels will put quite a weight on the mounting points. Contact me if you require more infomation, but hope you find this useful.
Cheers
Roger

Hi Roger,

The spare wheel carrier was an expensive option on all syncro’s, both for 14 and 16”. They are very rare, you can’t get them from vw anymore.

They also have a stay open lock.

The problem is the freight costs. If you had to pay for labour to build one the same, you would not be able to make it for less than $2000. There is a lot of design work here. If you have the equipment, time and skills, you could make it cheaper. These have stainless fixings, adjustable hinge bearings and a proper automotive lock.

The original spare wheel carriers cost over A$3000 and there is a cheap one from Berndt Jaeger for about A$500. (+ postage)

I am going to talk to a few of the local fabricators around my area,
as the expense outways need unless u pop two wheels on one day, i know
it may happen.
There has to be a cheaper way to achieve the out of reach??
Maybe pinching parts from other 4wd's and adapting them. But i will
ask local fabricators first.

Offsubject: Finally after close to 6weeks of trying I learnt that my
diff lock activators, resevoirs, lines and face plate etc are on their
way, apparently. CJ at Syncrospares may have been a little busy and on
holidays(unnotified), but the service was poor to say the least. There
was very little by way of communication from syncrospares which is
very frustrating when u are half way across the world. A very negative
experience for such a simple job, more communication skills are needed
to operate a good business on a small international trade scale, and a
little computer skills wouldnt go astray either.

Cheers Roger.
I appreciate the effort and diagrams, it is difficult because apart
from functionality they also complete the look. So as said i really
would like to obtain a rear ladder and spare wheel carrier combo, but
i am afraid at present cost is the killer..
