Speaker Polarity

I am switching the original radio for another (a new one that I have had in stock for decades).  On checking the wiring diagrams, I see that the speakers have a polarity.   I haven't pulled one out to look but I imagine that they are coil speakers.   Can anyone tell me why they would be polarity specific?

So that they push and not pull and stay in phase with each other.

Thanks Phill.

I expected that you would have an immediate explanation.
